DeGale defeats Demers, says he’ll be world champ by end of year

Super middleweight contender James DeGale (15-1, 10 KO’s) totally annihilated Canadian fighter Sebastien Demers (31-6, 11 KO’s) in the 2nd round in a fight that arguably should have never been made in the first place on Friday night at the Hilton Lac Leamy, Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. The ending of the fight was a simple one; DeGale hit Demers with a left uppercut and Demers reacted to the shot by turning his back on DeGale and walking several feet and then taking a knee.

The fight was then halted after Demers failed to get off his knee and resume fighting. You could guess that that something like this was going to be the outcome of the fight from the very start of the fight, because DeGale was just hammering Demers at will and not getting much back in return.

DeGale looks good when he fights guys that don’t punch back, but it’s a different story unfortunately for him when he faces someone that can give it back to him like George Groves, Hadillah Mohoumadi and Piotr Wilczewski. DeGale lost to Groves in 2011 and he arguably should have losses to Mohoumadi and Wilczewski.

Demers landed some nice right hands in the 1st round, but he wasn’t consistent enough with his offense to make this actual fight. With nothing much coming back at him, DeGale slapped Demers at will in the 1st round. The fight was over quickly in the 2nd with DeGale landing a hard left uppercut that caused Demers to take a knee causing the fight to be stopped.

DeGale’s win over the over-matched Demers seems to have planted ideas in his head about his talent, as he said “Give me a couple of more fights. I’m going to be a world champion by the end of this year.”

By the end of the year, I see DeGale getting easily beaten by one of the world champions, if he even gets a title shot, which is a pretty big if. Can you picture DeGale fighting Andre Ward, Carl Froch or Mikkel Kessler? I think those would be bad mismatches with DeGale getting stopped.
