BJ Flores Makes Case for Numero Uno In the under card but televised portion of Hook City

By Caoch Tim Walker: BJ Flores (24-0-0 KOs 15) made a strong case for being considered the top cruiser-weight contender by earning a TKO victory over journeyman Epifanio Mendoza. The loss was Mendoza's fourth in his last five fights. Though Mendoza has a much higher knockout ratio than Flores it was obvious by the thudding sound of their gloves that Flores was the stronger puncher. The punching power difference was even more obvious when sweat would spray from Mendoza's head whenever Flores landed a shot.

The fight was an entertaining but was stalled when Mendoza suffered a left shoulder injury. Flores, desiring to win but not overtly injure his opponent, at that moment looked to the referee for instruction who quickly ushered them to fight on. Without delay Flores began to press the action. A few moments later Mendoza's corner accepting that he was in obvious pain and taking punishment mounted the apron and stopped the bout.

This was not the end. In the post fight press conference Flores admitted that he needed to be more impressive than he was in his last fight which drew a bit of criticism. When asked about the recent comments made by Matt Godfrey proclaiming himself the number one cruiser-weight contender and if his performance in the ring was a direct statement to that proclamation Flores responded, “I'm not going to say that I am or I'm not (the number one cruiser-weight contender) but I am willing to prove whether I am or I'm not if I get that opportunity. So if Matt Godfrey stands in my way then so be it. He can get it..”
