Honorio-Abelyan Headline Friday's "CMX Boxeo de Campeones"
LAS VEGAS, NV (November 4, 2004) – Now into its fifth full month of production, “CMX Boxeo de Campeones”-- presented by CMXsports and promoted by Guilty Boxing -- returns This Friday November 5, LIVE from The Gold Coast Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV.
Former NBA champion Martin "El Brochas" Honorio, 17-2 (12 KOs), from Mexico City, Mexico, will risk his two-year, seven-bout winning streak (six by KO), when he rumbles with former NABO champion and former world title challenger, William "The Conqueror" Abelyan, 23-5-1 (12 KOs), from Las Vegas, NV, in the 10-round featherweight main event. Combined, their records are an impressive 40-7-1 -- a winning precentage of 83%.
Boxing fans from around the world can catch all the action via a live internet stream, and access the replay, at www.cmxsports.com for a monthly subscription fee of just $4.95. The series airs every Friday night, beginning at 11 P.M. ET / 8 P.M. PT. Subscribers will also be able to access archived fight footage and get behind-the-scenes interviews, previews and articles. The broadcasts will be available in English and Spanish. Newly elected World Boxing Hall of Fame induct, "The Colonel" Bob Sheridan, a veteran of more than 750 world title broadcasts, and former NFL All-Pro kicker and veteran sports announcer Benny Ricardo, will be handling the English broadcast's -- "CMX Champions of Boxing" -- blow-by-blow and color commentary, respectively. The Spanish language feed of the broadcast will feature former five-time world champion Manuel Medina providing the color commentary. Boxing historian Bert Randolph Sugar, former editor of The Ring and Boxing Illustrated, and the author of more than 50 books, has signed on as CMXsports Senior Boxing Analyst At-Large, providing weekly columns to the CMXsports website and commentary to the broadcasts. A new Sugar column, "Sugar 'N Spice," runs on CMXsports.com every Friday.
"CMX Champions of Boxing" is also televised on BEN Television, a free to air channel that covers all-over the Great Britain and Ireland markets and reaches more than seven million homes on the BSKYB platform on channel 184 Electronic Programme Guide in the UK alone. BEN Television also reaches out to Western Europe and North Africa collectively reaching more than 30 million satellite accessible digital homes.
Honorio made his "CMX Boxeo de Campeones" debut in August, stopping Jesus Martin Bermudez via a sixth-round KO at The Orleans. He followed that with a second "CMX Boxeo de Campeones" knockout performance in September -- a TKO 2 or two-time Brasilian champion Giovanni Andrade, who was enjoying his own five-bout winning streak. Victims of Honorio's winning streak have included: Cristobal Cruz (KO 1), John Nolasco (unanimous decision), and Sergio Sanchez (TKO 10) for the vacant NBA featherweight title. He is currently the top-rated contender in the WBA Fedecentro and the NABF's No. 2-rated contender.
Abelyan, a southpaw with a 23-5-1 (12 KOs), record, had hos four-year, 13-bout winning streak -- which included seven knockouts -- snapped in his first world title shot, against WBO featherwight champion Scott Harrison. Abeleyan is a native of Armenia, now living in Las Vegas. He first garnered the attention of the boxing world by destroying the WBC's No. 1 contender, Guty Espadas, 34-3, via a unanimous decision, August 5, 2001. Abelyan knocked Espadas down twice en route to victory with scores of 99-90, 98-90 and 97-90. The most amazing thing was Abelyan took the fight on just four days notice! Abelyan followed that epic win with four more victories in 2002 -- a unanimous decision over Jesus Salud, 63-10, knockout victories of Alvin Brown, 17-5, and Orlando Soto, 32-8, the latter was for the NABO featherweight title, and a 10-round decision over Armando Cordoba, 17-8-1. Last year, Abelyan knocked out former WBC Continental Americas champion Alejandro Estrada, 26-2-3, and successfully defended his NABO title, winning a 12-round unanimous decision over Jose Luis Tula, 15-8-2. All told, Abelyan's seven previous opponents, before challenging world champion, Harrison, had a combined record of 204-45-6, and a winning percentage of winning 80%. Abelyan's stock rose with every victory, where he eventually, became the WBO's No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger.
CMXsports and Guilty Boxing will produce 48 two-hour shows a year over a three-year period with two cards each month emanating from Las Vegas --The Orleans Hotel & Casino and the Gold Coast Hotel & Casino. The remaining two shows per month will be broadcast from different locations, including, southern California and Mexico. Recent shows have emanated from Las Pulgas Club in Tijuana, Mexico.
