Interview with David Quinonero

26.12.06 - By Bradley Marchetti: Who needs the Heavyweights, with such a talent rich Cruiserweight division? "The Night of the Crusierweight Chargers" will take place Friday, December 29th at the Valley Forge Convention Center, in Valley Forge, PA. For Spainiard David Quinonero, it will be his U.S. Boxing debut, after compiling a stellar 21-0 (19) record in Europe. David will be facing journeyman Dennis McKinney in scheduled 10 round main event. I had an opportunity to sit down with Quinonero in training camp at Miami Beach's Normandy Gym..

BM: David, you're making your US debut Friday, describe your style and what we can expect to see from you.

DQ: I'm a tough aggressive fighter who is always in great condition. I like to attack the body and wear guys down. I have power in both hands with good hand speed. I consider myself a thinking man's fighter who can adjust to any style in the ring.

BM: Since coming to the US how do you feel your training and management has gone so far?

DQ: Well, I had many delays trying to acquire my work visa since leaving Spain. I never stopped training though. I've had good sparring at Normandy with former Cruiserweight champ Robert Daniels. I'm in excellent shape for this fight. My promotions team, Lion Heart Boxing Productions with my manager Danny Hawk, has also done a great job.

BM: With 19 of your 21 fights ending by way of knockout, you have displayed power. What would you consider your best weapon?

DQ: My left hook to the body. I like to bang to the body.

BM: How did you get into Boxing?

DQ: Got into Boxing at age 10 in Spain. Spain has a good amateur program. I always liked Boxing. I became 2-time Spanish amateur champ.

BM: Who were your favorite Boxers growing up?

DQ: Ali. Holyfield in his prime. Marvin Hagler. Felix Trinidad. I like hard-working fighters with heart and intelligence. Currently I like watching Winky Wright. I have a similar defense.

BM: David, some boxers lose their passion for Boxing in the land of opportunity after they arrive in the US, how hungry are you to become a major player in the Cruiserweight division?

DQ: My passion has only grown. I remain very hungry. I'm constantly striving to improve. I'm very eager to show the US what I have to offer. My goal is to win the Cruiserweight title and then move on to compete as a Heavyweight.
