Forget Me Not: Michael Grant Re-emerges In Big Way

Aidan Monaghan

05.08 - Michael Grant: The name had faded from conversations of today's heavyweight elite, but on Saturday night Grant reminded the boxing public as to why it had once deemed his potential so promising.

Journeyman opponent Robert Davis' evening of work came to an end in the third round when Grant, focused and aggressive throughout proceeded to unleash scores of unanswered punches from a variety of angles that were finding their mark with disturbing efficiency. Indeed, referee Michael Ortega failed miserably to protect a fighter clearly unable to protect himself against the Grant assault. Throughout the entire 3rd round onslaught, Grants punches were crisp and quick, his balance and ability to measure his punches seemed newly refined. Following the second - and unnecessary - knockdown of Davis, the bout was finally brought to a halt. Immediately following the end of the bout, Grant raised trainer Teddy Atlas into the air after which Atlas declared to Grant "you found yourself tonight".

At 29, Grant is still a viable and potentially promising force in the heavyweight division. His victory over Davis marks his fourth consecutive knockout victory since his two consecutive defeats at the hands of Lennox Lewis and Jamile McCline respectively. Under the continued guidance of the proven Teddy Atlas it seems we can expect to see more of Michael Grant within the currently wide open heavyweight division.

Rumors of Grant's demise may have proven to be greatly exaggerated
