Witherspoon vs Savarese: Winner Could Get Shot at Klitschko's WBO Belt

18.09 - Fox Sports Net's SUNDAY NIGHT FIGHTS originates its Sunday, Sept. 22 show from Table Mountain Casino in Friant, Calif., featuring an NABO heavyweight title bout between veterans "Terrible" Tim Witherspoon and Lou Savarese.

The co-featured bout is for the NABF Bantamweight championship, pitting Ricardo "Chapo" Vargas vs. Trinidad Mendoza.

TIM WITHERSPOON (55-11-1, 38 KOs) vs. Lou Savarese (42-4-0, 34 KOs)

12 Rounds, NABO Heavyweight Championship Bout: The winner moves closer to getting a shot at a heavyweight championship - in this case, Wladimir Klitschko's WBO title, since the NABO and WBO are under the same banner. "The next step for the winner is to propel themselves into a heavyweight championship fight," said promoter Dan Goossen. "These are two exciting and big heavyweights and now the stakes have gotten higher."

Witherspoon, a former WBA and WBC heavyweight champ, is looking for his fourth consecutive victory in 2002, the last two on SUNDAY NIGHT FIGHTS - Ahmad Abdin (10 round decision on May 18) and Darroll Wilson (2nd round KO on March 10).

Savarese, 37, is coming off a Feb. 11 unanimous decision over David Bostice to capture the IBA Continental title. His career has been earmarked with bouts against prominent fighters, including losses to Mike Tyson and George Foreman and victories over the likes of Lance Whitaker and Buster Douglas.

SUNDAY NIGHT FIGHTS airs at 6:00 PM local time* (live in the Eastern Time Zone) with announcers Barry Tompkins, Rich Marotta and former world champion Sean O'Grady. The Goossen-Tutor Promotions presentation includes ring announcer and Playboy model Amy Hayes.

* This week's SUNDAY NIGHT FIGHTS airs on FSN regional networks at 6:00 PM local time, with the following exceptions: Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia - 8:00 PM; Fox Sports Net Florida - 12:00 AM; Empire Sports Network - 12:00 AM. Replays during the week on most regional networks (check local
listings).
