Boxing: THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO, HMMMM...

By Robert Dreson

Since a lot of unfortunate events are happening in boxing this short year, like the recent postponement of the De La Hoya vs Vargas match, among other things, I thought I would keep the subject light. A lot of humorous events, quirky facts and some amazing quotes are always floating around the sport of boxing and they make you wonder...

MIKE TYSON, IN SEARCH FOR A CONTENDER…

I'm sure fans have read articles penned by various writers who question Tyson's right to challenge Lewis for the title. They claim that Tyson hasn't fought a legitimate heavyweight since, Donovan "Razor Ruddock". Who was this masked contender, Razor Ruddock? Well, upon reviewing Razor's ring record, I now question him, too! When Razor fought Tyson a decade ago, Razor already had one glaring loss on his record. He was beaten and TKO'd by journeyman David Jaco in the 7th round. Jaco has an overall ring record of 24 W-25 L and 1draw! If you want to see the worst of David Jaco, go to the video store and pick up Tyson's own video, Mike Tyson's Greatest Hits! This video presents all of Tyson's incredible knockouts as a young contender leading to the title. Watch as David Jaco gets crushed by Tyson in the first round! So tell me now, who was Tyson's last legitimate contender, Mitch "Blood" Green?

RAZOR RUDDOCK'S BIO...BOXER AND INVENTOR?

Speaking of Razor Ruddock, did he ever get his invention patented in either the United States or Canada? After all, if you recall, he got tired of the cross, left hook and jab. Razor had invented a new punch called the "SMASH". That's what he called his hybrid punch during his prime. Listen, I'm not making this up. No other boxer has used the "SMASH" since Razor himself. Was it because Razor never licensed other boxers to use the trademark "SMASH"?

WILL THE REAL CELEBRITY STALKER PLEASE STAND UP!

The De la Hoya-Fernando Vargas press conference got very nasty. Vargas hates De La Hoya for numerous reasons that go back many years. After all, De La Hoya isn't the most humble guy in boxing. Anyway, De La Hoya countered at the press conference that Vargas is an obsessed fan or bluntly a "celebrity stalker". Really? Well, after the anti-Mexican De La Hoya lost to Puerto Rican Felix Trinidad, De La Hoya married Puerto Rican pop singer Millie Corretjer, moved to Puerto Rico and out of all the towns he could have chosen as home, Dan Rafael of USA Today, revealed that De la Hoya currently, "lives 200 or so yards from Felix Trinidad…" Sheesh, I think Tito needs an order of protection from this guy. An extra, HMMMMMMM.

MAX KELLERMAN AS EMINEM?

Mad Max Kellerman has a great show on ESPN2. He's a top boxing analyst. But, do you know that before breaking into boxing, he joined forces with his brother, to form the rap group "Max & Sam"? Max was signed to Columbia records in 1994. This is the same record company that spawned great artists like Fugees and Nas. Max & Sam first released single was "Young Man Rumble". Wait, before you run to the record store to buy it, let me warn you, that Max may be the worst white rapper you ever will hear, this side of Vanilla Ice.
