Wladimir Klitschko to announce
fight at New York's Russian Tea Room
29.10.01 - New York - Wladimir Klitschko will announce
his upcoming world title defense on Tuesday, October
30, 2pm local time, at the roomy and elegant Russian
Tea Room in New York City.
The WBO heavyweight champion selected an advantageous
moment and a lively day to announce his third title
defense (his second one in the US). It's because only
five hours after Klitschko's press conference the
legendary basketball player Michael Jordan will celebrate
his NBA comeback at Madison Square Garden - after
an absence of three years.
Wladimir Klitschko, 37-1 (34 KOs), will face American
based Nigerian David Izon on December 1 at New York's
Javits Center.
"This Tuesday is a perfect day for the press
conference. I'm very happy that we were able to get
things done", Cedrick Kushner said who will promote
the event together with Klaus-Peter Kohl of Germany's
Universum Box-Promotion.
"At the same evening the Yankees are playing
against Arizona. On no other day you could have a
larger number of press members in town."
Promoter Kohl will take the airplane to New York tomorrow,
along with his 25-year-old world champion. After the
press conference inside the Russian Tea Room, an elegant
establishment on four floors, Kohl and Klitschko will
go and watch Michael Jordan's comeback game.
Originally Klitschko, a PhD of the sport sciences,
wanted to defend against American Ray Mercer. But
the 40-year-old American suffered a deep cut in a
tune up fight on October 13 and had to call off.
That's why Don King promoted David Izon stepped in.
He's considered an even stronger challenger for Klitschko
than Mercer would have been. The 33-year-old Florida
based Izon captured silver at the Olympic Games of
1992. He is 27-3 (23 KOs) as a professional.
