Justice served cold: Mayweather remains

By Phenyo Molefe: It’s has been just over a week and half since the boxing world was cast in flames, bearing witness to the return of the gifted Floyd Mayweather in a masterful showing which left no reason for doubt. His fight seemed a tactical tool of composition, seemingly sketched as a warning to those who dare doubt his brilliance and ability to draw retribution. continue

Wolak-Rodriguez II Set For December 3rd Cotto-Margarito Card: Will The Support Bout Steal The Show?

By James Slater: “You know it will be another classic,” Delvin Rodriguez to Dan Rafael when speaking of his upcoming return fight with Pawel Wolak. As fans have probably read or heard by now, 154-pound contenders Delvin Rodriguez and Pawel Wolak will soon treat the viewers with a second instalment of the cracking war they put on on July 15th. The ten-rounder the two put on ended up being scored a draw (no-one really complained about the result afterwards) and now the two gutsy warriors will do it all again on December 3rd - this time on a much bigger, grander stage. continue

Carl Froch: “Ward might be a little bit reluctant to use his head so the cut might be a good thing”

by Geoffrey Ciani (Exclusive Interview by Jenna J & Geoffrey Ciani) - This week’s 144th edition of On the Ropes Boxing Radio (brought to you by CWH Promotions) featured an exclusive interview with reigning WBC super middleweight champion Carl “The Cobra” Froch (28-1, 20 KOs) who is scheduled to have a unification bout against WBA champion Andre Ward (24-0, 13 KOs) in the Super Six Final, which has now been rescheduled for December 17. Froch spoke about his upcoming fight and also spoke about his career experiences and his future. He also touched on a variety of other topics including Bute versus Johnson, Bernard Hopkins, Mikkel Kessler, the return of Andre Dirrell, and more! Here is a complete transcript from that interview:

JENNA J: Let’s move to our second guest of this week’s show. He is the reigning WBC super middleweight champion of the world making his sixth appearance to On the Ropes. We’re joined by “The Cobra”, Carl Froch. How’s everything going today, Carl?

CARL FROCH: Yeah, very good, very good. I’m doing very well. Thank you.

JENNA: Excellent to hear. Let’s talk about the big story that’s going around in the super middleweight division. Andre Ward had to postpone your fight. What were your first thoughts when you heard about him pulling out of the fight?

FROCH: I was initially disappointed, mainly for the fans because I’ve got a big influx of fans buying tickets and booking flights and organizing accommodations. So initially I was disappointed, but they’ll get refund on all the stuff. They can delay the flight for a small admin fee. So after a couple of hours of just working that out I wasn’t too flustered to be honest. I’ve gone through my whole career with people pulling out and being delayed, and vacating titles and stuff. So I’m pretty hardened to the fact that people can pull out of fights. It’s never really straightforward for me. You know, I’m happy now that it’s rescheduled and not a cancellation. So the fight will just go back. continue

Mayweather-Ortiz: A New Term Coined – “Legal Sucker – Punch”

By Karim ‘Kato’ Godfrey: A little over a week has passed, the dust has settled but the debate rages on. Is there such a thing as a”legal” sucker – punch? Bernard Hopkins: “Most people are looking for me to beat Chad Dawson, well they’re absolutely right! But it’s the way I beat him that I think they’re going to be shocked and surprised about.”

by Geoffrey Ciani (Exclusive Interview by Jenna J & Geoffrey Ciani) - This week’s 144th edition of On the Ropes Boxing Radio (brought to you by CWH Promotions) featured an exclusive interview with reigning WBC light heavyweight world champion Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KOs) who made history in May when he became the oldest boxer to ever win a major world championship. Hopkins is scheduled to defend his title on October 15 against “Bad” Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KOs) in a fight that will be available on HBO pay-per-view. Hopkins spoke about his upcoming fight and also shared his views on a variety of other topics, including the importance of having an old school corner, the key to beating Floyd Mayweather Junior, top boxing trainers, Antonio Tarver, and his vision for a battlefield in the cruiserweight division that would include migrating smaller heavyweights and bigger light heavyweights. Here is a complete transcript from that interview:

JENNA J: It is time for our final guest of this week’s show. He is the reigning defending WBC and Ring Magazine light heavyweight champion of the world. Making his eighth appearance to On the Ropes Boxing Radio we are once again joined by “The Executioner”, Bernard Hopkins. How’s everything going today?

BERNARD HOPKINS: I’m doing fine. I’m looking at some history and just winding down, and then winding back up in another four hours before I head out to the gym.

JENNA: Alright well the fight is less than three weeks away. How are you feeling now?

HOPKINS: I’m feeling good. I mean it’s a thing, a process that started four or five weeks ago. But everything is good. Everything is on time and everything is moving the way it’s supposed to.

JENNA: So what things are you working on in camp with Nazim to deal with someone that has the speed and size of Chad Dawson?

HOPKINS: Basically, you know, be me and do what I’ve been doing for two decades in my career. As you know and for people that haven’t known, this is 13, maybe 12 southpaws that I’ve fought, especially in championship bouts. So I’m very aware of the style and what to do. I’m 12-1 with southpaws and some people could easily argue that I’m 13-0 if you go to the Joe Calzaghe split decision loss. Other than that, I don’t like to use the phrase “business as usual” even though I just said it. I take every fight seriously, but to me it is a thing where I understand where I need to be and I understand what I need to do. continue

Ted the Bull’s Scotch and Cigar Club #23

Floyd MayweatherBy Ted Sares:By Ted Sares: This edition is dedicated to my fellow ESB posters.
Let’s get right to boxing topics, opinions, disagreement, or agreement. Tonight we are featuring brief but hopefully thought-provoking subjects. Let’s sit back with something liquid and amber (and maybe with some ice), torch up a Griffin Corona, and unwind. D-Jay Red is spinning tunes out of his Harlem headquarters. He‘s got everything from funk to rap. Boosty, ya dig?

Floyd Mayweather Senior: “Floyd could whop Pacquaio and Amir Khan in the same night, but they got a little something where they got the edge”

by Geoffrey Ciani (Exclusive Interview by Jenna J & Geoffrey Ciani) - This week’s 143rd edition of On the Ropes Boxing Radio (brought to you by CWH Promotions) featured an exclusive interview with well know boxing trainer Floyd Mayweather Senior, whose son, Floyd Mayweather Junior (42-0, 26 KOs) just scored a controversial fourth round knockout victory against Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KOs). Mayweather spoke about the fight and the controversy, and also shared his views on various other topics, including Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan, Larry Merchant, and more! Here is a complete transcript from that interview:

JENNA J: Let’s move to our final guest of this week’s show. He is no stranger to On the Ropes because he’s making his fourteenth appearance. He is a top trainer in boxing today. He is the father of Floyd Mayweather Junior. We have the one and only Floyd “Joy” Mayweather Senior! How’s everything going today Floyd?

FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR: I’m doing great.

JENNA: Alright Floyd, well the boxing world is certainly talking about your son’s last performance in the ring against Victor Ortiz. There is a little bit of controversy involved how the fight actually ended with a fourth round stoppage. I wanted to get your views on it. How did you see the fight?

MAYWEATHER: It’s pretty much what you had seen. The fight was a legitimate fight. Everybody is trying to say that the fight was fixed or whatever they’re trying to say about it. There is no question when the referee says, the last the referee tells you is, “Protect yourself at all times!” That’s what he tells you, and he didn’t protect himself because it’s time to fight. It’s not time to bump gloves no more. You already bumped gloves. There’s no need to bump gloves. It’s time to fight! Everybody’s got this thing all twisted like little Floyd stole on him. First of all, he was the first one that started the mess by head-butting little Floyd. He’s the one that started it, anyway! Little Floyd just ended it. That’s all that was. continue

Recalling Michael Spinks Vs. Larry Holmes - When A Good Little ‘Un Beat A Good Big ‘Un!

Reevaluating the Top 5 Pound-for-Pound Boxers in the World

by Geoffrey Ciani - Following the aftermath of Floyd Mayweather Junior’s legal yet controversial knockout victory against “Vicious” Victor Ortiz, it is time to explore the impact this victory has had on the mythical pound-for-pound charts. Who is the best fighter in the world? Is it Floyd Mayweather? Or is it Manny Pacquiao? The ordering really boils down to a matter of personal preference, and while Mayweather and Pacquiao are universally recognized as the two best boxing has to offer, there is still some matter of debate regarding the rest. Here is my personal take on it:

1a. Manny Pacquiao:
Record: (53-3-2)(38 KOs)
Division: Welterweight (147 lbs)
Age: 32
Last Fight: W UD12 Sugar Shane Mosley (May 7, 2011)
Next Fight: Juan Manuel Marquez (53-5-1)(39 KOs)(November 12, 2011)
Pacquiao deservingly earned the top spot when he went on one of the greatest runs in boxing history. This all started with his brilliant effort against Oscar De La Hoya when he scored an upset victory after jumping up two weight classes to 147 after he had just one fight at 135. Since that point, Pacquiao has never looked back. He has dominant wins against Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito, and Shane Mosley. What is most impressive about Pacquiao’s run is that he is outclassing naturally larger foes through his unique combination of speed, angles, and explosiveness. In addition to being a tactically sound fighter who knows how to win, Pacquiao also happens to be one of the most exciting combatants in the sport which only adds to his appeal and marketability. He has not lost a fight since dropping a decision to the great Erik Morales back in May 2005, which was a loss he has since twice avenged by knockout. Until he loses, he rightfully belongs at the top of the charts.

1b. Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Record: (42-0)(26 KOs)
Division: Welterweight (147 lbs.)
Age: 34
Last Fight: W KO4 Victor Ortiz (September 17, 2011)
Next Fight: ?
Were it not for his retirement Mayweather would probably still be a lock for the top spot, but his break from boxing happened to correspond with Pacquiao’s historical breakthrough. It is difficult to place him above Pacquiao considering all he had accomplished while Floyd was inactive. The situation is somewhat similar to what we had in the lead up to the first fight between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali, where we had two terrific fighters who each had a legitimate claim to the heavyweight throne. Mayweather’s absence from the sport allowed Pacquiao to surpass him much in the same way that Ali’s absence paved the way for Frazier to become the recognized heavyweight champion. Although the circumstances are obviously different, we are left in an eerily similar scenario. To truly determine who the best really is, Pacquiao and Mayweather need to finally square off and hopefully they will sometime next year. But until that happens we are left with a scenario where the debate shall forever loom. In the case of Ali and Frazier, they were both willing and eager to face each other to prove themselves in the ring. Unfortunately for boxing fans, neither Pacquiao nor Mayweather seem to share this desire to prove their greatness to this point. Will these two ever compete to settle this debate once and for all? Time will tell. continue

Cotto-Margarito II To Get The “Face Off” Treatment!

By James Slater: Along with the quite excellent 24/7, HBO Sports has another winner in the new “Face Off” series that is reserved only for the biggest bouts out there. Emanuel Steward: “I would absolutely think that Antonio Tarver would do better than maybe anyone against Wladimir”

by Geoffrey Ciani (Exclusive Interview by Jenna J & Geoffrey Ciani) - Last week’s 142nd edition of On the Ropes Boxing Radio (brought to you by CWH Promotions) featured an exclusive interview with Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward, who shared his views on a variety of topics, including which Klitschko he feels has the greater legacy, Andy Lee’s upcoming rematch with Bryan Vera, Hopkins vs. Dawson, Miguel Cotto’s December rematch with Antonio Margarito, Sergio Martinez, possible opponents for Wladimir, and more. Here is Part 2 of 2 for the complete interview transcript:

JENNA J: Okay Emanuel, let’s change things back to Wladimir as you mentioned earlier. There has been a lot of talk who his opponent will be if he actually fights in December. I hear rumors that he will be fighting Mormeck, a former cruiserweight champion, and I’m just curious what you’ve been hearing?

EMANUEL STEWARD: Well I’ve heard so many names that have came up, and I told Wladimir whoever you fight you won’t be criticized. That’s just how bad the rest of the division is, especially after David Haye and the way between him and his brother they’ve pretty much eaten everything up that is out there. So whoever it is, it will be acceptable. Nobody is going to like it because nobody is going to create the excitement like David did by talking, but there is no excitement out there from anybody I see. I have no idea myself still who it may be, and we talk fairly regularly.

JENNA: From you standpoint, do you think someone like Antonio Tarver would be somebody that could sell a fight and get American fans interested even though he is grossly outsized?

STEWARD: Well first of all I’d like to see him fight back in America, regardless. We don’t have too much to choose from. We got Antonio and we’re back to Arreola, again. I don’t know what’s going to happen with Thompson and Chambers. We don’t have too much, but I would absolutely think that Antonio Tarver would do better than maybe anyone against Wladimir because of the fact nobody is going to be favored to do that much. But through Antonio talking so much, which he’s a good talker—he’s one of the best that’s out there in the history of boxing that I’ve listened to. He can talk it up and make it a big fight. continue

My take on Mayweather-Ortiz + Videos

'Simply the Best' - Mayweather's actions were fantastic!

Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. will ultimately happen next year

By Jenna J - The talk of boxing right now is centered around one man, a fighter that is not afraid to offend anyone that he feels offended him. That fighter is Floyd Mayweather Jr. and he is coming off a controversial fourth round win over former WBC Welterweight champion Victor Ortiz in a fight that has upset a lot of fans and followers of the sport. The controversy centers around not whether a punch was illegal, but really questions if that legal shot was sportsmanlike from arguably the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the game. In the fourth round of what was shaping up to be another one-sided boxing exhibition for Mayweather, the action shifted a little bit and Victor Ortiz mounted an offensive outburst that had Mayweather retreating to the ropes and on the defensive, when out of nowhere an illegal and intentional headbutt came in from Ortiz which left Mayweather cut on both the inside and outside of his lip, and Victor Ortiz on the receiving end of a point deduction for the foul. As things turned out, this would be the beginning of the end for Ortiz. When Joe Cortez called time in, Ortiz still feeling apologetic came in looking for acknowledgement from Mayweather, received a small gesture from the former champion, followed by a quick left hand, and shortly thereafter by a powerful right. Victor Ortiz crumbled to the canvas, and was unable to beat the count issued by the referee, losing his WBC championship in only his first defense. continue

Mike Perez Wants Tyson Fury On Nov. 12th - Make This Fight Happen!

By James Slater: Unbeaten Ireland-based Cuban heavyweight prospect Mike Perez, disappointingly out of action since winning “Prizefighter” back in May, has called out fellow unbeaten Tyson Fury. Perez, a 16-0(12) southpaw, says he and his team have been trying to get a recognizable name into the ring since his May 7th triumph - with names Kevin Johnson, Jean Marc Mormeck, Johnathon Banks, Vinny Maddalone, Travis Walker and others reportedly offered a fight with Perez - but to no avail. continue

Floyd Mayweather: The Future’s Uncertain And The End Of His Career Is Always Near

By James Slater: It seems we can forget all about Floyd “Money” Mayweather, the biggest, the most controversial and the most exciting fighter in the sport (in and out of the ring), fighting again any time too soon. Though the fans want to see more of the 34-year-old master who frustratingly opts to take extended “vacations” after his big fights, Floyd has and always will do what he wants to do. continue

Sav's View- How to Beat Mayweather

By Jamie Savin: How to beat Floyd "Money" Mayweather, that is a question that was being asked during the UK PPV airing of Mayweather vs Ortiz, in fact an article or two has appeared on this very website on the matter. It has been peculating in my mind for a few days, but the game plan for Mayweather has changed or so it would seem following the Ortiz and Mosley fights. continue

Tomasz Adamek still has a lot of potentially good possibilities at cruiserweight

by Geoffrey Ciani - Most boxing observers were not too surprised when Vitali Klitschko dominated every second of every round in his recent title defense against Tomasz Adamek. Ever since Adamek first decided to make the jump to heavyweight, he was widely perceived as being physically too small to have any real chance to compete against the elite big guys. The Klitschko mismatch proved this beyond any shadow of a doubt. Adamek is a blown-up cruiserweight, nothing more. Despite his size disadvantage, Adamek was nevertheless talented and skillful enough to string together some decent wins against much larger foes, which is a strong testament to his abilities.

There has been no official word on where Adamek goes from here, but the smart move for him would be a return to cruiserweight. For starters, Adamek has the ability to dominate that division and add to his legacy. More importantly, however, the most entertaining fights of Adamek’s career happened south of heavyweight. His battles with Paul Briggs at 175 and his back-and-forth cruiserweight thriller against Steve Cunningham are the type of fights that have had the greatest appeal to fans. As a heavyweight, his most exciting victory was probably against Chris Arreola but aside from that, he became more of a tactical boxer than a crowd-pleaser out of sheer necessity. This generally led to duller fights. In order to compete with these big men, Adamek had to utilize his speed, reflexes, and timing. He had to learn to box more rather than brawl and trade, which was more his nature. If he can combine his newly refined boxing skills with his former more aggressive style, he may wind up proving to be an even better cruiserweight now than previously. continue

The Ethics of Boxing

by Niko Tricarico: The world of real estate has an innumerable amount of laws designed, basically, to protect human beings from their own immoral tendencies. Don't fire Larry Merchant .... fire Floyd, Jr.

By Paul Strauss: Once again Little Money revealed himself as a little class ass. He is a great fighter, and because of that he believes he can say and act anyway he chooses, and do so without suffering any repercussions. The voices in his mind apparently tell him because he is a premier fighter that that must mean he knows boxing. He fails to understand that knowing "how to box" is not the same as "knowing boxing". continue

Congratulations Erik Morales!! Now Please Retire!

By Jason Peck: I’m not one of those old-time boxing fans, who watched back in the day when Nixon was president, John Travolta was popular and Muhammad Ali was the only word in sports. I hadn’t even been born yet. My addiction started little more than a decade ago when Erik Morales was already recognized as a living legend, and I’ve never lost my admiration for him.. continue

Does Victor Ortiz Deserve A Rematch With Floyd Mayweather?

By James Slater: The fans seem set to argue long and hard over how last night’s WBC welterweight title fight between champ Victor Ortiz and challenger Floyd Mayweather Junior ended. Some claim Ortiz - who was embracing with Mayweather after having landed a blatant head butt on his opponent and was under the assumption that the action was not yet set to resume - got what he deserved when he was iced in the dying seconds of the 4th round. While others claim that at the very least the actions of Mayweather were of the cheap, classless variety. continue

Morales Makes History, Cano Makes A Name For Himself

Mayweather Owns Ortiz..But Will he ever fight Pacquiao?

By Danny Serratelli: Many times when Floyd Mayweather is in the gym he sounds like he is doing an X-rated Muhammad Ali impersonation. Ali was “The Greatest” both in the ring and while Floyd hasn’t yet had to show that he possesses the resiliency and ability to triumph over adversity that Ali did; however, he has mastered the art of psychological warfare that Ali seemed to invent. continue

Coming into the night, many questioned whether we would see the speed, defense, and reflexes that made him one of the perennial figures of this era. continue

Morales - Cano Quotes

Erik Morales:

“He’s a young fighter and he throws really hard punches. It took me some time to get my rhythm, but when I did I was clearly the better fighter. I could tell the blood affected him and made him nervous and once he started breathing profusely I could tell he was scared. continue

Mayweather Responds to Butt with “Controversial” KO

By Ted Sares: As anticipated by most savvy boxing people, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0) showed up with all cylinders finely tuned and with no signs of ring rust. He assessed his opponent as a surgeon might do his patient. This done, he then quickly zipped open his remarkable toolkit and took out his instruments consisting of, among other things, a great defense and especially his signature straight leads that consistently found a home on Victor’s face. Though it was clear Victor’s moniker of Vicious was well-deserved, Floyd nevertheless dictated matters and controlled and contained Ortiz within the tight cocoon of his fight plan. continue

Could Pablo Cesar Cano become the next Maidana?

By Geraldo Gomez: When Marcos Maidana fought Victor Ortiz many boxing fans including myself had not heard of Maidana. All I knew is that he had a good record and good knockout ratio. Many people on paper saw this fight as a pathway for bigger things to come up for Ortiz. I was at the Staples Center for the fight and by the end of the first round, I knew it was going to be an explosive fight. The rest is history. Maidana would eventually win the fight and put on hold all the plans Golden Boy had for Ortiz. It was because of that fight that the boxing world was introduced to Marcos El Chino Maidana. continue

Mayweather/Ortiz - Live From Vegas: Sense of "Shock" Looms In The Air

EastSideBoxing's Vivek "Vito" Wallace gives a few random last minute thoughts to ponder live from the MGM GRAND:

Only hours away from the return of Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s return to the ring after yet another long hiatus, seems there's a different energy in the air on the streets of Las Vegas. Several fans and media alike have given thoughts on the pending showdown and oddly enough, there seems to be a vastly different vibe. Suddenly, the man we know for toting a gang load of dollar bills is perceived is to some about to be reduced to 'change' (from his winning ways). In the words of one fan, "I don't know what it is, but I have a very funny feeling about this one". Those words were intriguing to me, because just a few days ago, they were the exact same ones that crossed my mind.

In the words of Mayweather sr., "reflexes is one of those things about a fighter that you don't know you've lost until it results in a loss". The great Roy Jones jr. suffered his first career defeat at this very same age. And that came without any layoffs. This will be Mayweather's first fight in 16 months, and not too long ago, he returned to the ring after a long 20 month hiatus. Getting optimal rest is one thing.....but such a long time away from any craft that one used to "love" suggest that there could very well be a loss of passion. Lack of passion, and a return against a young, hungry southpaw with nothing to lose and everything to gain can be the making of a 'perfect storm'. continue

Floyd Mayweather Sr. Likes His Son’s Chances Against Ortiz

Could Saul “Canelo”Alvarez hit the “Big Time” with a win against Gomez?

By Joseph Herron: When Oscar De la Hoya was being touted as the “next big thing” in boxing, his detractors’ most rampantly spouted argument was that of legitimate competition.

Most of the Golden Boy’s harshest critics would state that De La Hoya was a big man fighting strategically in a little man’s division. Oscar would knock the socks off of the majority of the competition in the lightweight division, but wasn’t recognized by most as a legitimate superstar until he fought the elite level competition in the junior welterweight and welterweight divisions, such as Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell Whitaker, and Hector Camacho. continue

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Victor Ortiz: Head to Head

Fans tire of hearing athletes described as geniuses

By Paul Strauss: Start with the basics. What should it mean when someone is described as a genius? Generally speaking, a genius is thought to be someone with extraordinary intellectual power or superior mental abilities. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean a person has to have been formally educated. There are many examples of individuals becoming self-educated. What's troublesome in sports is when an individual who manages to perform physically at a high level in some athletic endeavor is then anointed by an announcer, or someone in the media as a genius! continue

Emanuel Steward: “I hope Floyd realizes this is going to be a challenge and not just another one of these easy fights”

by Geoffrey Ciani (Exclusive Interview by Jenna J & Geoffrey Ciani) - This week’s 142nd edition of On the Ropes Boxing Radio (brought to you by CWH Promotions) featured an exclusive interview with Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward, who shared his views on the upcoming showdown between Floyd Mayweather Junior (41-0, 25 KOs) and Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KOs). Steward also touched on a variety of other topics including Vitali Klitschko’s tenth round stoppage win against Tomasz Adamek, Pacquiao-Marquez III, and whether boxing needs a super heavyweight division. Here is Part 1 of 2 for the complete interview transcript:

JENNA J: Let’s move to our second guest of this week’s show. He is making his seventeenth appearance with On the Ropes Boxing Radio. We are joined by Hall of Fame boxing trainer Emanuel Steward. How’s everything going today, Emanuel?

EMANUEL STEWARD: Everything is going fine.

JENNA: Alright let’s talk about a fight you called just this past weekend, Vitali Klitschko versus Tomasz Adamek. It was a fight that a lot of people wanted to see for awhile even though people thought it would be a mismatch. Now that the fight has played out, what did you think of it?

STEWARD: Well the fight went pretty much as I expected. I was hoping for something different. Vitali’s a very tall man. He fights very tall and he’s about the best I’ve seen for being able to handle smaller guys by using a jab. The way he jabs he doesn’t commit. He doesn’t step in. He like leans in the jab always keeping his body in a position where as soon as you punch him, he’ll pull back and then he’ll start jabbing you again. He moves his opponents’ heads very well where guys can never get in position to take advantage of him if he misses a punch. So he fought a good fight. Adamek was just too small. It’s a case where if you asked Adamek just to wipe the sweat off his brow, Adamek would normally need a chair or a stool or something so he can do that. So it’s hard to see him being competitive hitting him on a consistent basis. He was just too small, and Vitali fought a very, very smart fight. After the first round I could see in the eyes of Adamek that he really didn’t want to be there, and he welcomed the stoppage when the referee finally stopped the fight. continue

The Panda vs. The Cannon: Is a showdown between Chauncy Welliver and Shannon Briggs now inevitable?

by Geoffrey Ciani (Exclusive News from “On the Ropes”) - Former two-time heavyweight champion Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs (51-6-1, 45 KOs) and top ten heavyweight contender Chauncy “The Boxing Panda” Welliver (49-5-5, 19 KOs) had a heated exchange of words in separate segments on this week’s 142nd edition of On the Ropes Boxing Radio (brought to you by CWH Promotions). Given where these two currently are in the respective stages of their careers, a fight between Briggs and Welliver makes perfect sense for a multitude of reasons.

For starters Briggs seems inclined to make a return to the ring. As he explained, “I may make a return and fight my way back to the top and get a title shot hopefully.”

Briggs was unimpressed with the recent efforts of Vitali Klitschko in his tenth round stoppage win against Tomasz Adamek and would like another crack at the champion himself. “I fought Vitali with one arm”, said Briggs. “I know that if I would have had two arms I would have knocked him out. No question about that. I hurt him in the tenth round after taking a beating and I was exhausted. I still hurt him in the tenth round. I would have knocked him out and I told him that, but it is what it is.”

Beyond the desire to once again compete at the top level, Briggs has additional motivation to make a return to the squared circle. “George Foreman is my idol. Although I was never a George Foreman fan growing up, and I fought the man, but I look at what he did in his comeback in winning the title and what he used to brand himself. If I choose to come back it would be for that and to basically promote my asthma product that I’m coming out with, Zivair, and that’s only to help people because asthma is a disease that kills people.” He continued, “I would love to launch this product and boxing is the way I’m going to launch it, and with the tools that I’m going to use, that’s what I’m going to do.” continue

There is no blueprint to beating Floyd, not yet..

By Vitali Shaposhnikov: What makes the unbeaten fighters so intriguing and interesting? The number “0” is definitely attractive, but why are these fighters praised, respected, and most importantly valued more? I think that the main interest that this phenomenon brings to the table is the curiosity of why this man is able to stay unbeaten, and who will figure out the riddle of their demise. continue

Would Ali Have Beaten The Klitschkos? The Debate Begins

aliBy James Slater: With both Klitschko brothers, Wladimir and Vitali, currently receiving all manner of deserved praise - with top writers such as Dan Rafael saying that the two giants, Vitali in particular, would have given “any heavyweight who ever lived trouble” - some experts have resorted to mythical match-making to see to it that Drs. “Steel Hammer and Iron Fist” have a real fight.

Having wiped out practically every single notable contender in today’s heavyweight division, we have to ask ourselves, how great are the Klitschkos, and how would they have done against the best in history that came before them? Most experts, when asked who is the finest heavyweight champion of all-time, answer Muhammad Ali; and not just because the man born Cassius Clay told anyone who would listen that he was “The Greatest.”

The praise is more than justified considering Ali’s amazing achievements, his incredible quality of opposition and his longevity - to say nothing of Ali’s sublime physical gifts. But would Ali have been able to deal with the Klitschkos continue

Do you want Ortiz to win? Join the crowd!

By Paul Strauss: No, the question wasn't, "Do you think Ortiz will win?" Experts, most fans, and just anyone but Oscar De La Hoya, already have given their overwhelming response of "No" to that question. There are a few who might go out on a limb and say, "He has a slim chance", but that's about it. So there's not much interest in soliciting answers to that query. continue

Vitali targeting Haye next; Adamek likely to stay at heavyweight

By Vitali Shaposhnikov: There is always something to be learned after every fight a boxer goes through. Experience has always been talked about as a fighter’s main benefit, giving them the ability to dominate not only physically but strategically as well. I have learned a few things about both fighters after re-watching the Vitali Klitschko (43-2-0) vs. Tomasz Adamek (44-2-0) bout that took place in Poland this past Saturday, September 10, 2011. continue

'Left-Hook Lounge': Vivek Wallace's Mailbag feat. Mayweather/Ortiz, Gamboa, Vitali-K/Adamek, and Dawson!

Chali B. (Miami Lakes, FL): I think Yuriorkis Gamboa is one of the most electrifying newcomers on the fight scene today. How did you rate his performance and how do you see him turning out as a pro?

Vivek W. (ESB): There were many in the media who apparently felt Gamboa's performance was marginal at best. I guess I fall in that other bracket! In my opinion, I thought his performance was everything I personally want to see in a fighter on the rise. I think when you look at things in totality, perhaps there's room for improvement. There is in every fighter. But what I love about Gamboa at this stage is the fact that I can remember seeing him about 5, 6 fights ago, and making mental notes of things I'd like to see him improve on, and it's like he had a list, and each of those fights he steadily checked them off one by one. continue

Prescott: I should have been given the decision against McCloskey; I bet Khan is happy now

Gamboa's victory speech somewhat of a surprise?

By Paul Strauss: Yuriorkis "El Cicion Guantanmo" Gamboa managed a 8th round TD over southpaw Daniel Ponce De Leon in HBO's featured bout at Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey last night. De Leon was a big underdog, but seemingly managed to make a tough fight for Gamboa. Most experts thought that Gamboa would be much too fast and powerful for De Leon, but De Leon's awkward stance and rhythm proved troublesome for the little Cuban. continue

Vitali Wants To KO Haye Next, What Next For Brave Adamek?

By James Slater: World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight king Vitali Klitschko put on a rather ruthless display last night in Poland, as he pounded an incredibly brave Tomasz Adamek to a sickening 10th-round TKO defeat. Watching the fight, I had the impression “Dr. Iron Fist” could have stepped up the pace any time he wanted to and taken the much smaller man out. continue

McCloskey, now in line for a second shot at the WBA 140-pound title, improved to 22-1(12). Prescott is now 24-3(19).

It was a great start for younger man Prescott, who scored a knockdown in the opening round. It wasn’t a great or hurtful knockdown by any means, as McCloskey went down from a cuffing left hand to the side of the head, but the ref scored the knockdown. continue

James Toney: “Bernard Hopkins is a big old crybaby, a sissy in disguise!”

by Geoffrey Ciani (Exclusive Interview by Jenna J & Geoffrey Ciani) - This week’s 141st edition of On the Ropes Boxing Radio (brought to you by CWH Promotions) featured an exclusive interview with former three division champion who spoke about his career, his future, and the prospect of fighting Denis Lebedev later this year. Toney also shared his views on a variety of other aspects pertaining to the current boxing landscape including the Klitschko brothers, David Haye, Pacquiao-Marquez III, Mayweather-Ortiz, HBO’s 24/7 series, Bernard Hopkins, Antonio Tarver, Marco Huck, Steve Cunningham, and more! Here is a complete transcript from that interview:

JENNA J: It’s actually time for our second guest of this week’s show. He’s making his second appearance with On the Ropes. We’re joined by the former middleweight, super middleweight, and cruiserweight champion of the world—James “Lights Out” Toney! How are you feeling today James?

JAMES TONEY: I’m feeling good. Fabulous!

JENNA: Alright! Well let’s talk about some rumors that are going on around with you. There are rumors that you will be taking on Denis Lebedev in November. How true are those James?

TONEY: Well the rumors are true. Whatever goes on we’re pushing pretty soon because I’m ready to fight. I can’t get a fight with the so-called big guys in the division—the Klitschko sisters, or any of those guys, so I’m going for the next best thing.

JENNA: Okay well the next best thing would be down at 200 pounds. Why did you make this choice to go from your last fight at 257 down to the cruiserweight limit?

TONEY: Well basically like I said, I can’t get a fight in the heavyweight division so I have to go down in weight in order to try and get a big fight. The main goal right now is to get Bernard Hopkins in the ring. First thing first is David, I don’t know how you say his last name but whatever his name is, I’m going to get him in there and then I’m going to get rid of him! continue

Haye Breaks His Silence, Says He Will Delay Retirement For A Return With Wladimir Or A Shot At Vitali - Haye “Dares” Vitali To Give Him A Chance

Haye, never one to have a softly-softly approach, hasn’t lost the ability to talk trash as a result of his second pro loss. continue

Breaking News! Emanuel Steward will not be training Chad Dawson for the Bernard Hopkins fight!

by Geoffrey Ciani - American light heavyweight contender Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KOs) is slated to challenge the ageless warrior Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KOs) on October 15 for the WBC title that Hopkins recently won when he became the oldest boxer in history to win a major world championship. Apparently however, Dawson will be going into the biggest fight of his life without Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward.

Steward was already in camp working with several boxers, including middleweight contender Andy Lee who is preparing for a long anticipated rematch with Bryan Vera. by Geoffrey Ciani (Exclusive Interview by Jenna J & Geoffrey Ciani) - This week’s 141st edition of On the Ropes Boxing Radio (brought to you by CWH Promotions) featured an exclusive interview with the newly crowned IBF welterweight champion of the world Andre Berto (28-1, 22 KOs) who is coming off a fifth round stoppage victory against Jan Zaveck (31-2, 18 KOs). Berto spoke about his victory and also discussed his future plans. Additionally he shared his views on some upcoming fights including Floyd Mayweather Junior versus Victor Ortiz and Manny Pacquiao squaring off for the third time against Juan Manuel Marquez. JENNA J: Let’s move to our first guest of this week’s show, he’s a returning guest. We’re joined by the new IBF welterweight champion of the world, Andre Berto. How’s everything going today Andre?

ANDRE BERTO:Everything is going pretty good. You know I’m just getting back and just relaxing with the family a little bit.

JENNA: Okay, well you had a pretty damn good fight this past weekend against Jan Zaveck. He was a tough opponent. He gave you a good run. You came up with the title. How do you feel about your performance?

BERTO: You know like I said, I feel my performance was so-so because it was a little bit out of character for me. I could have easily just used my speed and just boxed him. I don’t know. I went in there with a lot of different emotions and I really wanted to try to press the action. I knew he had never been stopped and I wanted to just try to beat him up a little bit, and try to be the first one to try to stop him, and to just show folks I didn’t go anywhere. Pretty much to a point I noticed that his punches couldn’t hurt me, so I just started trying to press him, and walk him backwards, and just keep ringing off combinations. continue

Why Tomasz Adamek has some reason for hope against Vitali Klitschko

by Geoffrey Ciani - When Vitali Klitschko came out of retirement after almost four years of inactivity to challenge WBC champion Sam Peter for the belt he once held, many wondered if the elder Klitschko brother would even survive training camp let alone a fight against “The Nigerian Nightmare”. After all, Vitali had to call off scheduled fights with Hasim Rahman on three separate occasions due to injury setbacks suffered during training. Klitschko did the honorable thing and retired to not hold up the progress of the division, but it seemed the old warrior had seen his best days come and go. His body simply became too fragile. He even had to call off an attempted comeback nearly one year prior to the Peter fight when a back injury suffered during yet another training camp prevented a fight with Jameel McCline from going forward. The fact that his only two career losses happened when his body failed him in fights he was winning with Chris Byrd and Lennox Lewis only amplified the perception that he was injury-prone.

Of course, Vitali went on to stop Sam Peter in one-sided fashion and has since successfully defended his title in equally one-sided fashion six times. Now he goes for defense number seven against former cruiserweight and light heavyweight champion Tomasz Adamek in his home country of Poland in a matchup many fans view as a total mismatch. Adamek, after all, is not a natural heavyweight. He is a skilled fighter who has shown tremendous heart and warrior spirit in his career, but he is grossly undersized for the weight class. Nevertheless, Adamek has strung together a series of victories against much larger foes. After successfully testing the heavyweight waters in October 2009 against fellow Pole Andrew Golota, Adamek has since won five in a row, marking him as one of the most active fighters in the division. continue

HELENIUS: Thank you.

HELENIUS: Yeah, of course I feel always that I could do better and maybe move more on my feet and stuff like that apart from my own distance. I don’t know. I just felt like I wanted to do some close combat and stuff like that, that I usually don’t do in the fights. But I’m pleased with my fight, yeah.

JENNA: Alright, now did he do anything in the ring that surprised you?

Floyd Mayweather Senior: “They ain’t looking at him as being ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd or the ‘Money’ Mayweather—they’re looking at him as being the ‘A*shole of the Year’!”

by Geoffrey Ciani (Exclusive Interview by Jenna J & Geoffrey Ciani) - This week’s 140th edition of On the Ropes Boxing Radio (brought to you by CWH Promotions) featured an exclusive interview with boxing trainer Floyd Mayweather Senior who recently had a heated encounter with his son Floyd Mayweather Junior on HBO’s first episode of 24/7 in promotion of the highly anticipated September 17 bout between Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs) and WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KOs). JENNA J: It is time for our third and final guest of this week’s show. He is making his 13th appearance with On the Ropes Boxing Radio. We are joined by the one and only Floyd “Joy” Mayweather Senior. How’s the day treating you Floyd?

FLOYD MAYWEATHER SENIOR: Everything is going great.

JENNA: Alright Floyd, well people have been talking about the incident that happened between you and your son on the HBO 24/7 series. Can you tell us in your view what happened with that whole situation?

MAYWEATHER: It was nothing but just a father and a son thing. He’s just disrespectful. He’s ungrateful. All I can do is leave it up to the higher power. That’s all I do. I can’t judge my son in no kind of way or anything like that. But like I said, one thing I can do is go on about my business, take care of my business, and whatever happens with it, let him do what he’s got to do for himself. I don’t really want to bother with him as being a son like that.

JENNA: How long ago did that incident happen between you two?

MAYWEATHER: It happened about, right now it’s going on about two weeks now. It’s going on about two weeks since that happened.

JENNA: Now the 24/7 cameras really didn’t capture how it really all started. Was it really just a debate over two female fighters or was it something more?

MAYWEATHER: Well first of all, the one guy Tim Coleman used to train at the gym. My brother used to train Tim Coleman, and my fighter knocked Tim Coleman out! My boy knocked him out. My boy was named Vernon Paris. Vernon Paris knocked out Tim Coleman. If you remember seeing the fight on ESPN when the guy kept hitting him with the body shots, and the guy kept going down, and the referee just called it off. You might not remember. That fight was probably about five weeks ago. continue
