Joan Guzman Flying To PR To Support Panther Miranda and Mendez

02.03.07 - By Michael Marley, Boxingconfidential.com: SAN JUAN --Undefeated WBO junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman is not the type of guy who forgets a friend or a protégé. So that is why the Dominican Dandy will be landing in La Isla del Encanto early Saturday. Guzman is coming in to give moral support to middleweight contender Edison "La Pantera" Miranda in his crossroads HBO bout with another power puncher, Allen Green, and to cheer his Dominican protégée, 130-pounder Argenis "La Tormenta" Mendez (2-0) in his four-rounder..

"You can't keep Joan away from the ringside when his peoples are fighting," manager Jose Nunez said. "He and Edison used to be with the same manager and they became good friends. And Joan has taken such a special interest in Mendez who was the leading Dominican amateur star before he turned pro. Argenis is 2-0 and he is coming along. Being in camp with Guzman showed the 18-year-old how a champion lives and trains on a daily basis."

Nunez said Guzman is waiting on co-promoters Golden Boy and Sycuan to deliver the kind of big money match he hungers for.

"Joan would fight the Pacquiao-Solis winner or the Barrera-JM Marquez winner," Nunez said. "He doesn't care which one really. He would also be happy to fight Edwin Valero. But Humberto Soto makes no sense because, although he is a tough guy, he has no world title and he brings no money to the table.

"Guzman and I both think a big, big bout is coming sooner rather than later. When it does, Guzman will leave no doubt as to who the best in the world at 130 pounds is!"
