Joe Calzaghe Confirms Hand Break

10.04.07 - WBO World Super-Middleweight Champion Joe Calzaghe confirmed today that he fractured his hand against Peter Manfredo Jnr last Saturday night at the Millennium Stadium. Calzaghe, boxing’s longest reigning world champion, cracked the scaphoid bone in his left hand in the third round just before his barrage of unanswered blows caused the referee to step in and call a halt moments later. The win meant he equalled heavyweight great Larry Holmes and long-time rival Bernard Hopkins in fourth place on the all-time list of world title defences. Promoter Frank Warren is now looking for Calzaghe to get back into action in July with American Jermain Taylor as the number one target..

“ I’m disappointed that I fractured my hand but that’s boxing and injuries happen. I shouldn’t be out for too long though, probably about four weeks, and then I’ll be back to light training in preparation for the proposed July date which I am really excited about.” Said Calzaghe.

The unbeaten Welshman was ecstatic with the turnout for his first fight in Cardiff in over a year and half. The passionate 35,018 crowd, a record attendance for an indoor boxing event, roared Calzaghe and the rest of the Welsh lads on the card to victory.

He added, “It was a fantastic occasion not just for me but for Enzo Maccarinelli, Gary Lockett, Bradley Pryce and the rest of the boys on the show. I was floored by the massive reception I got when I made my ring entrance and was very proud to be fighting at the national stadium in front of the biggest boxing crowd in over a decade. It is a moment that I will always remember throughout my career so it’s a big thank you to all my fans.”
