European Boxing Roundup: Kessler vs Calzaghe, Warren vs Palle, More

Kessler vs Calzaghe?19.4.07 - By Per Ake Persson: Danish paper Berlingske writes that Mogens Palle has offered Frank Warren no less than five million USD for WBO supermiddle champ Joe Calazaghe to face WBA/WBC counterpart Mikkel Kessler in Copenhagen in September or later. Warren has previously went public with an offer for three million USD for Kessler to face Calzaghe in July in the UK but Palle tells Berlingske the proposed contract didnīt arrive until yesterday and that he wasnīt impressed with what he read. Francisco Nohales and Sergio Palomo clash in what for now is an eliminator for the Spanish 130 lb title May 8 in Barcelona. The fight could be upgraded to championship level soon as the champ, Oscar Sanchez Sandoval, is injured. In supporting bouts Danish supermiddle Mads Larsen, now with Sauerland Event, returns to action and jr welter prospect Ali Chebah takes on localite David Racaj. Norwegian jr welter Geir Inge Jorgensen face Frenchman Fabrice Colombel for the inuagural WBC Mediterranean title June 15 in Torrevieja, Spain. The show is promoted by the Torrevieja Boxing Club headed by John Ruud. Heavyweight Leif Dolonen Larsen returns after a lengthy layoff on the undercard.

Cuban heavy Odlanier Solis has been sparring with US veteran Vaughn Bean at the Arena Box Promotion Gym in Hamburg. Solis makes his prodebut April 27 at the very same place.

Spotlight Boxing and Pro Sieben join forces again for the third "Fight Night" May 25 in Cologne. Headlining the bill are WBA female flyweight champ Susianna Kentikian and WBO I/C titleholder at middleweight Sebastian Zbik. Jr light Vitali Tajbert get a good test from Peter Petrov, a Russian fighting out of Spain, in the chief support.

EBU superbantam champ Bernard Dunne will make a voluntary defence of the title June 23 in Dublin. The EBU homepage reports that Norwegian Reidar Walstad is the opponent - Reidarīs father Robert confirms that there have been talks but no agreement have been reached.
