The number 3 ranked Martinez made it a short night for local favorite Saul Roman, ranked fourth by the WBC, after delivering a crisp straight left to Roman’s abdomen in the fourth round. The bout was halted at 2:25 after the Culiacan native immediately dropped to his knees and doubled over unable to beat the count.
Roman for his part attempted to tie up and pressure the Argentinean on the inside, but Martinez was simply too fast for him. The Argentinean southpaw was able to repeatedly spin off the ropes and catch the Mexican national, punishing him with short jabs and quick left hands down the pipe as Roman tried to escalate the fight.
At the end of the fight, both men gave respect to each other while the crowd cheered the early stoppage.
We will have an interview with Sergio Martinez shortly. Stay tuned.
