22.05.07 - By Ron Hansen: WBO Super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe (43-0, 32 KO’s) is raring to go for a fight with Jermain Taylor (27-0-1, 17 KO’s), the WBC/WBO middleweight champion, especially after seeing Taylor’s latest poor showing last Saturday night against Cory Spinks. As things stand, Calzaghe’s promoter, Frank Warren, is still working on arranging the fight which they hope to take place in September if things can be worked out financially.

However, Taylor is not close to being satisfied with the money offer of $4 million, and reportedly wants much more than that, in the neighborhood of up to $6 million. This may seem unreasonable to some, however, Taylor has other fight options on the table to pursue, in particular with Kelly Pavlik (31-0, 28 KO’s), who easily destroyed the highly hyped knockout artist Edison Miranda last Saturday night. As of right now, there’s a huge demand for Pavlik vs. Taylor in the American public, which will only increase as the time goes on. Showing how desperate he has become, Calzaghe is now willing to come to the United States to fight Taylor, forgoing his usual pattern of fighting mainly in front of friendly audiences in the UK.
In recent times, Calzaghe has seemed almost obsessed with fighting Taylor, even though Mikkel Kessler, the WBC/WBA super middleweight champion, would seem like the more logical opponent considering he’s in his weight class and has been calling out Calzaghe for what seems like ages. However, Kessler is perhaps too dangerous for Calzaghe, hence the interest in Taylor, the softer opponent. If a fight can’t be arranged with Taylor, Kessler is a likely option, but obviously one that would be far less appealing for the 35-year-old Calzaghe given the way that Kessler has seemed almost unbeatable in recent showings.
