Arena distances itself from violence at ringside

23.05.07 - Arena Box-Promotion distances itself from any kind of violence at ringside. The ringside fights on Universum’s 250th event last Saturday were not initiated or provoked by arena-CEO Ahmet Öner. “Fights should only be held inside the ring”, states Öner. “To my mind the presence of bodyguards and hired goons at ringside and especially the brutal attacks on spectators harm the image of boxing itself. People will not go to any boxing event anymore if they have to fear a bashing. Hence, being the reputable promoter I am, I had never provoked such a thing..

A few days after the incident it is clear that the goons who attacked Öner and his attendants with nightsticks and other weapons were not part of the Pütz security crew. Thomas Pütz, head of the company, states: “I don’t know these people. They had no security passes.” Instead the goons were in the building with special VIP tickets given out by the Universum management.

As police is currently investigating the incident Arena does not want to commentate the attack any further.
