Ibragimov decisions Briggs! Welcome to the Sultanic era of boxing!
02.06.07 - By Izyaslav “Slava” Koza: Sultan Ibragimov has just become the newest WBO heavyweight champion after defeating Shannon Briggs via unanimous decision in Atlantic City, NJ. Ibragimov moved sensationally and avoided most of Briggs low but high voltage output throughout the entire 12 rounds. Rarely with his back to the ropes Ibragimov lunged forward whenever cornered and forced Briggs to avoid his shots and moved out of range after the controlled bursts of aggression had ended.

However, the real shocker in the fight came whenever Briggs actually scored, and Sultan rather than back down, pressed forward and pushed Briggs to exchange blows which really stunned the former champion. I had the bout 119-109 just like one of the three judges, who probably gave Briggs the first, but the other two scored the bout closer than they really should have with scores of 117-111 and 115-113. Even so the result was not in doubt.
Surprisingly Sultan was disappointed in his clinical boxing performance but if so hopefully he, true to his word, will show us even better then he did tonight. One can hope that next up for the new champ is a showdown with IBF champ Wladimir Klitschko. As a fan, knowing that Warrior’s boxing isn’t afraid to take big risks with their fighters, the way they did by matching Edison “Pantera” Miranda tough against Pavlik and Abraham, here is to hoping Klitschko Ibragimov unification isn’t too far off.
For now though congratulations to the new WBO champion on a fight well fought and a championship well won.
