Juan Carlos Gomez: “Allah will lead me to the World Championship!“
13.06.07 - Former World Cruiserweight Champion Juan Carlos Gomez presents himself well prepared for his fight against Dennis Bakhtov (Russia) this Saturday in Ankara. The Cuban is in good physical shape and self-confident as always. Gomez: “I have been received very friendly in Turkey. If I had felt that good in Cuba I would never have escaped..”
As a sign of fellowship the 33-year-old showed a tattoo of the Turkish flag on his chest at the press conference. Together with Sinan Samil Sam who defends his WBC International Champion belt against Oliver McCall on the same card Muslim Gomez visited the Kocatepe Mosque in Ankara and was visibly impressed.
Gomez: “After they stole my victory over Oliver McCall because of doping in October 2005 I was totally devastated. I swear that I never doped in my life. After the fight I went to the USA where I was built up by the Black Muslim community. That’s why I converted to Islam. I thank Allah for giving me back my courage, energy and self esteem. I am sure that He will lead me to the World Championship.”
To prepare the ground for a title shot Gomez - who is currently ranked on #8 in the WBA ratings - has to beat strong opponents starting with reigning PABA-Champion Bakhtov on Saturday.
Manager Ahmet Öner: “After a convincing victory over Bakhtov I am planning to organize an eliminator for Juan against Russian giant Nikolai Valuev. Then World Champion Ruslan Chagaev will be next.”
