Bernard Dune’s mandatory challenger, Kiko Martinez looks set to get support from unlikely quarters ahead of their European super bantamweight title fight. The unbeaten Spaniard has put pen to paper on a deal with Belfast man Pat Magee and a major English promoter..
The irony of the situation is that Magee also manages Belfast light heavyweight Brian Magee. Magee is trained by Harry Hawkins, who of course also trains Bernard Dunne.
Magee is believed to be interested in securing the promotional rights to the bout and will submit a purse bid to the European Boxing Union offices in Rome before the deadline on July 17th.
Speaking about the news Dunne’s manager Brian Peters said, “It just shows you the business of boxing that someone so close to home is actually plotting Bernard’s downfall.”
Despite the development Peters has no doubts that Dunne will be the first man to inflict defeat on Martinez perfect record. “It doesn’t matter where or when Bernard fights Martinez because he will prove that he is a truly world class operator when he does. This will be a career defining fight for Bernard and regardless of the date or venue I’ve no doubt that he’ll turn in the best performance of his career to see off Martinez.”
