27-06-07 - By Tony Nobbs: Anthony Mundine made a successful first defense by unanimously out pointing brave Argentine Pablo Neivas over 12 rounds at the Gold Coast Convention Center last night. Neivas was dropped by a right hand near the end of round three and again wobbled in round four. He came back strongly in the fifth and rained some wild shots on the champion who got caught by surprise somewhat as he Roy Jones like taunted Neivas and jumped around “Kangaroo style."
Mundine opened up again in the sixth and Neivas gobbled up a right hand that buckled his legs along the ropes. Neivas continued to try to land something that would turn the fight and had minimal success when the Australian would cover up. However Mundine's jab and piston like short flurries kept him in control. In round 10, Mundine got home a four punch salvo to the head that Neivas surprisingly ate. Neivas didn't remember his jab until the second quarter of the fight and looked useful when he was able to let his hands go and get Mundine backing up. In round 11 Mundine was warned for a low blow, Neivas for pulling behind the head. Round 12 was a good round with both opening up. The strong crowd rose and applauded at the end.
