Calzaghe vs. Kessler in jeopardy
29.06.07 - According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, the Super middleweight (168 pound) unification bout between unbeaten Joe Calzaghe and Mikkel Kessler is barely holding together largely because HBO doesn’t have the September 22nd date available, a date that was previously agreed upon by the two fighter’s promoters Frank Warren and Mogens Palle. Additionally, the promoters want more money, reportedly in the neighborhood of $5 million, which is more than what HBO wants to pay for it, possibly because of Kessler's lack of name recognition in the United States.

The fight may have to be moved to a later date, perhaps as late as November - the date that HBO had requested in the beginning of the negotiations.
Beyond that, however, if HBO can come up with the money for the later date of November, the promoters are reportedly willing to push the fight back to that date. Minus that, the promoters can attempt to try placing the fight on Showtime, but that's an equal long shot due to the same concerns as HBO - money and a lack of a free September date - Rafael reports.
