Karmazin, Kirillov, trainer Boris Zykanov passes away at 60

29.06.07 - By Izyaslav “Slava” Koza: Boris Ivanovich Zykanov, the man responsible for leading Roman Karmazin to a world title, as well as arguably helping Dimitry Kirillov achieve the same, has passed away at the age of 60 in his sleep last Monday in Los Angeles. Zykanov was a second trainer-father, after Igor Lebedev, to both Kirrilov and Karmazin, and took care of both in the gym as a trainer, and in his home as another parent.

While Freddie Roach was standing ringside for Karmazin’s title winning effort against Kassim Ouma, it was Zykanov who did the lion’s share of the work in the fight and in the ring. Against Luis Perez, it was Zykanov’s exclusive effort that allowed Kirrilov to regain his composure, and continue putting on a classic clinic that should have rightfully left him with a title.

He had left from the Ukraine bound for America in 1991, and with his family settled in Los Angeles. He worked at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym.

ESB offers condolences to the Zykanov family and the Karmazin team.
