01.07.07 - By Gary Jones: Featherweight prospect Miguel Roman (22-0, 16 KO’s) won an impressive 5th round TKO over Jose Alonso (32-13-3, 15 KO’s) at the Don Haskins center in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday night.

Roman, nicknamed “Mickey Mouse,” put on a body-punching clinic as he drove blistering hooks to the midsection of ring veteran Alonso from the opening seconds of the fight, giving him few opportunities to catch a breather from his constant assault. Alonso was hurt twice in the first round left hooks to the sides, and stepped backwards, wincing badly each time.
In the 3rd round, Alonso went down to the canvas after getting tagged with another monstrous left hook to the body from Roman. Miraculously, Alonso made it up, but he continued to take severe punishment, mostly to the body, for the remainder of the round.
In the fourth round, Roman connected with 20 consecutive shots to the body and head that went largely unanswered by Alonso, who looked to be in terrible shape.
In the 5th round, the one-sided beating continued, although Alonso was able to land several hard shots of his own while trying to fend off Roman.
It didn’t slow Roman down anything, however, as he soon after staggered Alonso with a left to the head, and then followed with a flurry to the head, causing the referee to jump in and halt the bout to prevent Alonso - who was still on his feet through all these punches - from sustaining any further punishment.
