Big Fight Boost For Joe Calzaghe

17.05.04 - Following Roy Jones Jnr’s shock second round KO defeat to Antonio Tarver last Saturday night, Britain’s JOE CALZAGHE has a big incentive to beat IBF World Light-Heavyweight Champion Glen Johnson on June 12 in Manchester. The unbeaten Welshman takes his first step into the 175lb division against Johnson at the M.E.N Arena in the joint main event with RICKY HATTON and knows a victory could lead to a unification fight with the new WBC champion.

Calzaghe said, “Tarver beat him the first time and I knew that he would beat him this time. Jones has always had a problem dealing with southpaws that’s why he never wanted to fight me. Full respect to Tarver he is the number one guy now,”

“I'm disappointed that he knocked out Jones before I did though. Jones never wanted to fight me at super-middleweight and I moved up to light-heavy to pursue him and also for the new and exciting challenges in represented. Now that Tarver has beaten him it has opened up a whole new scenario for me in the division,”

“Tarver’s win has given me a massive incentive to really do a number on Johnson and get a fight with him. Tarver’s now got the WBC title and I am confident of winning the IBF title so a unification showdown is a strong possibility.”

“He’s called me out for a fight before and I am more than happy to get it on with him.”

Tickets, priced at £150, £100, £60, £40 and £30, are available from Keith Prowse Ticketing: 0870 906 3839 and the M.E.N Arena Box Office on 0161 930 8000 or online at www.frankwarren.tv/tickets
