Vazquez Stops Marquez in 6th round TKO

rafael marquez04.08.07 - By Scott Frake: WBC super bantamweight champion Rafael Marquez (37-4, 33 KOs) was shockingly stopped tonight by challenger Israel Vazquez (42-4, 32 KOs) in the sixth round tonight at the Dodge Arena, in Hidalgo, Texas. Shortly after being knocked down by a tremendous left hook thrown by Marquez, the referee Guadalupe Garcia stepped in and stopped the bout despite Marquez seeming to be alright and fighting back without any problems. At the time of the stoppage, Marquez had a comfortable lead in the fight and had Vazquez cut around both eyes.

In the opening rounds, both fighters stood toe-to-toe, trading huge shots at close range. Like in the first fight, it appeared that Marquez was getting the better of Vazquez, tagging him with powerful jabs and right hands. Marquez, though, was stunned briefly in the third round, but appeared to recover well and continue slinging bombs nonstop.

There was talk afterwards of a third bout between the two fighters, although it's unclear how many people would be interested in watching a third bout between them considering the unsatisfying premature stoppage tonight.
