Matt Skelton Gets 'Big Bob'

26.05.04 - Heavyweight destroyer MATT SKELTON will make the first defence of his Commonwealth title against ‘Big’ Bob Mirovic on June 5 at the York Hall. The Bedford banger has blazed his way through domestic division since turning professional just over a year and a half ago -- with no amateur boxing experience – and has stopped 12 of his 13 opponents. Skelton won the British and Commonwealth titles in only his thirteenth fight last month when he stopped the champion Michael Sprott in the last round.

Mirovic, the 6ft 5in hard-hitting Croatian, is based in Wyongah, Australia, and holds the Australian Heavyweight title.

Skelton said, “After winning the British and Commonwealth titles against Michael Sprott my confidence is sky high at the moment. I’m never out of the gym so I’m happy to be fighting so soon and keeping busy with regular fights. Mirovic is a big bloke and can punch so I’m looking forward to testing myself against him.”

Chief support on the show is the rematch between Luton’s GRAHAM EARL and Bradford’s Bobby Vanzie for the Vacant British Lightweight Championship.

The undercard features London featherweight ace KEVIN MITHCELL, Birmingham’s former WBU World Middleweight champion WAYNE ELCOCK, Leicester middleweight MARTIN CONCEPCION, Bexleyheath welterweight GARY WOOLCOMBE and Paddington light-welterweight ASHLEY THEOPHANE.

Southend’s English lightweight champion DANNY HUNT has been added to the card and is in a six-round contest.

Tickets for ‘Come and Get it’, priced at £25, £40 and £60, are available from the Sports Network Box Office on 01992 550 888 or online at www.frankwarren.tv/tickets
