Martinez Stops Dunne In 1st Round TKO!

kiko martinez25.08.07 - By Gary Jones: European super bantamweight champion Bernard Dunne (24-1, 14 KOs) was shocked by Spanish 21-year old knockout artist Kiko Martinez (16-0, 13 KOs), losing by 1st round knockout at the Point in Dublin, Ireland. Dunne, 27, was dropped seconds into the bout by a right-left combination, and then knocked down twice more by Martinez before the referee Terry OíConner stepped in and halted the bout.

The fight started slowly with both fighters exchanging jabs in the opening seconds. Dunne suddenly opened up with several hard hooks, to which Martinez answered back with a left hand followed by a sharp two punch combination that dropped Dunne.

He looked more embarrassed than hurt, but that didnít matter to Martinez, who immediately came at him and landed a right to the midsection. Dunne moved away and was caught with two more rights to the head as he backpedaled.

Martinez kept coming forward and landed a powerful right hook to the top of Dunneís head, sending him to the canvas once again. This time, Dunne has a harder time getting to his feet as he staggered and leaned against the ropes trying hard to appear okay for referee OíConner. For several seconds, he appeared to not understand OíConnerís instructions as he asked Dunne to step forward and hold his hands up. Finally, he understood and came forward and the referee seemed satisfied enough to let the bout continue.

Martinez, sensing blood, came charging across the right and landed a right to the midsection, followed by three left hooks and short right that dropped a defenseless Dunne for the final time. This time, Dunne wasnít able to get to his feet without the help of referee OíConner, who stopped the bout at 1:26 of the first round.
