Margarito KOs Johnson In First Round
10.11.07 - By Matthew Hurley: Antonio Margarito came out like he promised against Golden Johnson, aggressively. He knocked down Johnson in the first round with a vicious barrage in the first minute of the fight, capped off with a tremendous left uppercut and then forced an eight count shortly thereafter. Johnson desperately tried to hold off the onslaught but Margarito, who wanted to make a statement in the fight, left no doubt, dumping his opponent to the canvas for a third time forcing referee Wayne Kelly to stop the fight at 2:38 of the opening round.

“It was all in the preparation,” he said in the ring afterward. “This is the new Antonio Margarito. We started too slow in the Paul Williams fight and now we start fast. I want the big names, Cotto, Mosley. I demand a match. If not them, Kermit Cintron, Hatton. We’re ready for everyone.”
Margarito is now the WBO Intercontinental welterweight champion.
