Joe Calzaghe In P4P Rankings

Following his sensational win over Mikkel Kessler, undisputed super-middleweight king Joe Calzaghe has been installed at No. 2 in Dan Rafael's ESPN.com pound-for-pound rankings. The unbeaten Welshman has hopped over target Bernard Hopkins who trails him at No. 4 and is amongst the worlds elite fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jnr, Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. Calzaghe is joined by fellow Brit Ricky Hatton who is in at No. 10..

Respected boxing writer Rafael said of Calzaghe: "It gets no better than Calzaghe's surprisingly dominant victory against Mikkel Kessler in perhaps the biggest fight in the 168-pound division history. It is not a reach to call Calzaghe the greatest super-middleweight ever after a performance that validated his 10-year title reign and gave him 21 title defences."

In addition, Kevin Iole, the award-winning writer for Yahoo.com, has Calzaghe at No. 3 in his Sports Top Ten Boxing Poll. Iole, who along with Tim Smith (New York Daily News) and Keith Idec (Herald News) crossed the pond to be ringside for Calzaghe's epic clash against Kessler at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, said: "Super Joe made a big impression with his win over Kessler."

WBO/WBC/WBA and Ring Champion Calzaghe said, "I'm delighted to be receiving the recognition I deserve after 10 years as world champion from the American media. I have had ups and downs in my career but through everything I've been a winner and the best is still yet to come. You know what they say about fine wine - it gets better with age. It's also great to step over Ol' Bernie in the rankings and I'll be looking forward to stomping all over him in the near future."
