Baldomir Wins Majority Decision Over Perez
By Scott Frake: Former World Boxing Council welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir (44-11, 13 KOs) survived a scare tonight, winning a 10-round majority decision over Luciano Perez (15-7, 13 KOs) tonight at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa, in Cabazon, California. Baldomir, 36, looking in poor shape compared to his championship form of a year ago, struggled badly with Perez, a fighter that will never be mistaken for a champion. The final judges' scores were 97-93, 96-94 and 95-95.

Baldomir, as usual, started slowly, and took a beating from Perez in the early going. In the 3rd round, Baldomir was stunned by a huge right hand from Perez, momentarily causing Baldomir to take a backward step. Baldomir kept coming forward though, taking a lot of punches to the face in the process while trying to get in his own licks. In rounds six thru eight, both fighters traded shots and showing little in the way of defense.
Both fighters looked horrible, mostly like club fighters as they traded shots. In rounds nine and ten, Baldomir landed his right hand and left hook with effectiveness, landing cleanly to Perez's head. Up to this point, the fight was basically even, but Baldomir's hard work over the final two rounds appeared enough to pull out the decision. It wasn't pretty but it was a win none the less for the 36 year-old Baldomir.
Over all, it had to have been a disappointing win for Baldomir, who was expected to have an easy time over Perez. Perhaps Baldmomir misjudged Perez's ability, thinking that because Perez had previously been beaten five out of his last eight bouts, he might be an easy mark. However, at 36, Baldomir can't afford to take anyone lightly as he found out tonight.
