Esquer pressed the action, trying to outwork Calderon perhaps hoping he could eventually wear out the 32 year-old Calderon in the later rounds. However, Calderon appeared fresh throughout, fighting in controlled bursts of combinations and making Esquer look bad in the process. The final judges' scores were 116-112, 118-110, and 115-113, all for Calderon.
In the early rounds, Esquer, only 21, came right at Calderon, throwing hard shots with many of them missing because of Calderon's uncanny movement to avoid the punches. In many of the occasions, Calderon turned the attack back on Esquer, hitting with blinding fast combinations and then quickly moving out of range to foil any attempts by Esquer to get any return fire in. As the rounds progressed, Esquer fell deeply behind in the fight.
However, he continued pressing the action but it wasn't working for him because he was still finding it hard to catch up with Calderon. In rounds eleven and twelve, Esquer desperately attacked Calderon, putting everything he could into his punches. Calderon, however, continued hitting him with blistering shots and getting the crowd into the fight. In the end, Esquer was simply outclassed by Calderon. Perhaps if Esquer had more power like Cazares, he may have been able to make the fight closer.
