Holmes Selected for Hall of Fame Induction

larry holmes11.12.07 - By Ted Sares: Larry Holmes will be inducted at a ceremony on June 8, 2008, along with junior welterweight champion Eddie Perkins. Middleweight Holman Williams will be inducted posthumously. All three are in the Hall's modern-era category.

Larry will be inducted as the longest reigning world heavyweight champion in boxing history, holding the title from 1978-1985. His 20 successful heavyweight title defenses were surpassed by only the great Joe Louis with 25. Holmes was close to equaling Rocky Marciano's 49-0 mark when he was upset by Michael Spinks in a highly controversial decision.

"Larry Holmes was probably the most under-appreciated heavyweight champion in history," said Emanuel Steward. "He should be right there with Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis, an all around fighter. He would have been a major problem for any heavyweight champion of any era."(Sharkey)

In my recently published book, Boxing is my Sanctuary, I rate the "Easton Assassin" as the third best heavyweight since 1950. He is rated behind Louis and Ali, but just one notch ahead of George Foreman and two above Rocky Marciano. Joe Frazier is further down, as it is a pound for pound list and many lighter weight fighters are listed above Smokin' Joe.

Since retiring, Holmes has become a successful businessman in Easton, PA who owns, among other things, numerous real estate ventures, a restaurant, and a boxing gym.

Ali was a guy that had a lot of discipline. If you hung around him, you’d be able to get some of that discipline that he had. And I learned from that. He was a sweet man.
