Hernandez Destroys Azzaoui

By Ron Hansen: Cruiserweight prospect Yoan Pablo Hernandez (14-0, 8 KOs) destroyed Mohamed Azzaoui (22-2-2, 8 KOs) in the 1st round, stopping him with a single left hook on Saturday night at the Seidensticker Halle, in Bielefeld, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Hernandez, a former 2004 Olympian for the Cuban boxing team and now living and fighting out of Germany, looked impressive in destroying Azzaoui, who is normally a durable fighter but was made to look like average by the 6'4" Hernandez.

Fighting on the undercard of Steve Cunningham-Marco Huck, Hernandez, 23, looked far and away the best cruiserweight of the bunch despite his age. In the opening moments of the fight, both Hernandez and Azzaoui traded shots, as they looked for openings. Hernandez leaned forward and landed a big left hook that snapped Azzaoui's head back and causing him to drop to the canvas. Though he tried to get up, Azzaoui was unable to beat the count, and the fight was stopped by referee Massimo Barrovecchio. In winning the fight, Hernandez picks up the World Boxing Association Fedelatin and World Boxing Council Latino cruiserweight.
