Rivera’s promoter, Don King, recently received a letter from Renzo Bangariol, WBA World Championship Committee Chairman, explaining that Rivera-Damgaard had been sanctioned for Oct. 2. King won a purse bid for promotional rights to Rivera-Damgaard.
Rivera captured the WBA crown September 13 in Berlin via a 12-round decision against previously unbeaten Michel Trabant (38-0). Damgaard, 33, has never fought outside of his native Denmark.
“Team Rivera is very pleased that Don King is making it possible for this fight to be at Madison Square Garden on one of the biggest pay-per-view events ever and in front of so many of Jose’s fans,” Rivera’s manager Steve “Tank” Tankanow said.
