Vargas & Wright to Finally Meet Again!

14.07.04 - Nearly five years since their action-packed world title fight, WINKY WRIGHT and FERNANDO VARGAS will meet again, promoter Gary Shaw announced today. Wright and Vargas will be spectators at Shaw's Thursday USBA welterweight championship card between Nurhan Suleyman and David Estrada at Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, CA. The fight will be televised nationally on SHOWTIME's SHOBox: The New Generation, 11 P.M. ET / 11 P.M. PT.

Wright, who became the division's first undisputed champion in 29 years by defeating WBC/WBA super welterweight champion Sugar Shane Mosley in March, lost a highly controversial majority decision to IBF jr. middleweight champion Vargas, December 4, 1999.

"Thursday will be like a big family reunion," said Shaw. "I promoted Vargas when he fought Winky, Winky's big victory over Mosley was promoted by me, and Winky has been looking for Vargas for nearly five years. I wonder who will throw the first punch when we finally meet?"

The televised co-main event will feature undefeated Mohammed Kayongo against Jose Antonio Ojeda in an eight-round welterweight rumble. The undercard will feature undefeated featherweight Mario Santiago, from Puerto Rico, and the pro debut of amateur sensation Daniel Cervantes, co-managed by Vargas, Roland Arellano and Shelly Finkel, in a four-round jr. welterweight bout.

The Chumash Casino Resort is located in Santa Barbara County, California, between Los Angeles and San Francisco in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley. In its 190,000 square foot facility, the Chumash Casino Resort offers Las Vegas-style gaming, 24-hours seven days a week. Tickets are on sale at the casino and priced from $30 to $70.
