Don King Leaves Juan Diaz

Matthew Hurley: Promoter Don King announced on Wednesday that he would no longer represent WBA, WBO and IBF lightweight champion Juan Diaz. Diaz is set to defend his IBF belt against Nate Campbell this Saturday night on the undercard of the WBC heavyweight title bout between Oleg Maskaev and Samuel Peter in Cancun, Mexico. King made the announcement at the final press conference for the fight..

Also leaving Diaz is attorney Fred Levin. Diaz and his manager Willie Savannah have been extremely vocal in their displeasure with King and have made repeated statements that they would not remain with King after their contract with the promoter expires at the end of March. There was speculation that the contract with King contained options on the boxer’s future fights.

After a somewhat uncomfortable preamble King said, “I bring this up to you today because, like Fred Levin, I have made the decision to no longer promote Juan Diaz. It’s not because I wouldn’t like to continue to work with Juan. It’s for the same reason that Fred Levin quit. I will no longer work with Juan’s manager Willie Savannah.”

King has promoted Diaz since September of 2006.
