Vera Defeats Lee In Round 7 - Photo Documentary! Luck Not With The Irish Tonight!
22.03.08 - By Peter Mark Heintzelman, Photos by Peter Mark Heintzelman: Despite the number of Irish colors flying in the stands at Mohegan Sun’s Arena, in Uncasville, Connecticut. With the win, Brian Vera, now 16-1-0, 10 KO’s, of Austin, Texas, not only notches a win against the highly touted prospect, but also assures himself of fame and fortune, as he rises to the limelight in the middleweight division.
Despite the Limerick charm of an undefeated record.
And, despite the high expectations of Irish Andy Lee’s rise in the middleweight division.
Number 7 was not lucky for the Irish tonight, as Brian Vera took Lee to school, until referee, Tony Chiarantano, stopped the fight at 2:17 of the seventh round!
Although Andy Lee had inflicted his own punishment against the underrated, underdog Vera through six rounds, including a first round flash knockdown that had Vera looking cross-eyed at a standing eight count, the Texan, just kept on coming. His combinations of head and body shots simply wore down Lee, and the “un” was removed from the front end of “defeated,” before a rowdy crowd at Mohegan Sun, and a national audience live on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights.
After the photos of the fighters checking in, and the ring girl’s appearance with the Round 7 card, the following pictures speak a thousand words as to the impact of two minutes and seventeen seconds that shocked the boxing world!
Andy Lee, of Limerick, Ireland, suffers his first defeat, leveling at 15-1-0, 12 KO’s, and returns to the chalkboard in Detroit’s Kronk gym with Emanuel Steward.
Did the ref stop the fight too soon?
What’s next for the fighters?
Should Vera, or Lee, for that matter, seek a risky rematch?!!
