Alex Arthur Backs Amir Khan
Commonwealth lightweight champion Amir Khan’s ‘best days’ are ahead of him, that is according to WBO super featherweight champion Alex Arthur, who watched Khan’s defeat of Michael Gomez in Birmingham at the weekend..
Arthur dismissed claims that had the fight taken place five years ago Gomez would have beaten Khan. Speaking to Setanta Sports News during Steve Bunce’s Boxing Hour, Arthur said:
“Amir will improve and he’ll learn. I think Gomez gave him a much harder fight than anyone in the boxing world expected. I think Amir was surprised and maybe even Michael surprised himself at the way he fought.
“But I think that Michael’s best day’s are behind him.”
Arthur will be appearing on the same bill as Khan at the MEN Arena in Manchester on Saturday 6th September, although neither fighter knows who they are going up against.
Arthur, who will be making the second defence of his title, said:
“I’m sure it’s not going to be [Marco Antonio] Barrera, I don’t think we could come to an agreement.
“I already know that I’m fighting, so as a boxer I can prepare for the fight ahead of me.
“Hopefully my opponent doesn’t know yet, so I’ve got the edge on him already.”
