Erdei beats Lakatus in front of his home crowd

10.09.04 - Budapest – In front of 10.000 enthusiastic fans at the huge Kisstadion in Budapest WBO light heavyweight world champion and Hungarian national hero Zsolt Erdei defeated his challenger Alejandro Lakatus with a unanimous decision over twelve rounds. The three judges at ringsite scored the contest 118:109, 116:111 and 116:112 all in favor of Erdei.

It was the second successfull title defense for Erdei after he won the WBO crown on January 17 from Julio Cesar Gonzalez, the conqueror of Dariusz Michalczewski, and retained it against Hugo Hernan Garay on May 8 in Dortmund.

Erdei remains undefeated at 21-0 with 13 Knockouts. Lakatus dropped to 24-4-1 with 18 knockouts.

On the undercard former WBO lightweight champion Artur Grigorian celebrated a successful comeback with a technical knockout in the second round over Hungarian Laszlo Herdzeg. The 36-year-old Grigorian stopped his foe with a powerful hook to the liver from which Herdzeg was unable to recover. Grigorian, now 37-1 (23), held the WBO title from April 1996 to January 2004 when Brazilian star Acelino Freitas beat him by unanimous decision.

Seen at ringside in Budapest: Former WBO light heavyweight champion Dariusz Michalczewski who hasn’t fought since he lost his title one year ago to Julio Cear Gonzalez. Negotations are ongoing for a fight between him and reigning WBA champion Fabrice Tiozzo.
