Cotto stops Pinto to win WBO Junior Welterweight title

09.09.04 - Unbeaten Miguel Cotto won the WBO Junior Welterweight title Saturday night with a sixth round knockout of overmatched Kelson Pinto. From the start of the fight, Cotto unloaded on Pinto with punishing left hooks to the head, which had Pinto retreating. Pinto was hurt in the second round and dropped to the canvas by a short left hook. In the third round, Pinto was stunned once again by Cotto’s left hook. In the fifth round, Pinto was dropped for the second time in the fight after absorbing a crushing shot by Cotto.

In the sixth round, Cotto (21-0, 17 KO’s) landed some big shots as Pinto, who was still hurt from the previous round and was no longer able to fight with intensity. After Cotto landed a left hook and a volley of punches, Pinto was sent face first to the canvas. Pinto was able to get up, but was too hurt to continue as his corner stepped in to stop the beating at 2:28 of the sixth round. It was the first loss for Pinto (20-1, 18 KO‘s), who had previously defeated Cotto twice while fighting in the amateurs.
