Team Sauerland wins purse bid for Valuev vs Chagaev II on May 30

Team Sauerland today won the purse bid for the eagerly-anticipated rematch between WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev and “champion in recess” Ruslan Chagaev with an offer of $2.814.414. “We are very happy to have won the bid and we are pleased to promote this fight for Nikolai,” said Sauerland Event General Manager Chris Meyer. “We intend to stage the bout on May 30. We have targeted Helsinki, Finland as the location but will announce further details in the next days.” The purse bid was held in Vitoria, Spain..

Valuev suffered the only loss of his career in April 2007 when Ruslan Chagaev clinched a close majority decision in Stuttgart, Germany. After Chagaev pulled out of two scheduled rematches with Valuev, he was named “champion in recess”, while the Russian Giant went on the win the vacant WBA heavyweight title in August 2008 with a victory over John Ruiz. He made a successful defence against Evander Holyfield in December. Chagaev returned from his Achilles injury with a success over Carl Davis Drumond in February 2009. “Effective June 1 there will just be one WBA heavyweight champion,” Meyer added. “All boxing fans will finally know who the real champion is. We thank the WBA for the quick course of action. This gives us the chance to put the record straight on May 30.”

Valuev, who is currently shaping up in Japan, was pleased about the outcome. He cannot wait to get back into the ring with Chagaev. “I have been waiting for this day for two years,” said the WBA heavyweight champion. “I will finally make amends for only loss of my career.”
