The Weight Told the Story, Hatton / Pacquiao!

By Jason Sardelis - On May 1st the day before the East meets West Mega fight Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and Ricky “Hitman” Hatton took to the scales for their routine scheduled pre fight weigh-in. “Pacman” weighed in at 138lbs while the “140lbs King” Ricky Hatton weighed in at the class limit of 140lbs. That together with Pacquiao’s tight muscular appearance was only chapter one..

Being a big fan of the entertaining fighting style Ricky Hatton brings I gave Hatton the peverbial punchers chance but fight time when the pre-fight weights were announced I knew Ricky’s chances were slim. Hatton’s fight weight was announced at 152lbs, 2 lbs less than Hatton claimed he would be. When Pacquiao’s weight was announced at 148lbs it was clear with Pacman’s weight gain and muscular definition that Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach quietly addressed what some may seen as a strength advantage to Hatton. Most believed “Pacman” to climb in the ring about 143/144lbs and Hatton at 154lbs or more. When I heard there was only a four pound difference, inside I knew Roach touched all the bases and taking it pound for pound I knew Ricky was in trouble.

Today with the twenty four hour weigh-in rule some fighters put on 15-17lbs sometimes more. In this bout the fight night weights told me the story. It was the weight that proved to me that fact that Pacquiao was better prepared!
