News - Warren Wins Libel Action Against Hide
Promoter Frank Warren has won £35,000 in libel damages against former heavyweight world champion Herbie Hide at London's High Court. The award follows comments made by Mr Hide on Steve Bunce's Boxing Hour which was broadcast on Setanta Sports News in July last year.

During a telephone interview, Mr Hide made a number of allegations against Mr Warren, none of which were true.
"In their natural and ordinary and inferential meaning the words complained of meant and were understood to mean that Mr Warren had dishonestly and corruptly bribed Johnny Nelson to retire and give up his WBO cruiserweight title so that Enzo Maccarinelli would unjustifiably gain it without having to fight him, even though Nelson was going to retire in any event," Mr Warren's lawyers told the court.
Mr Warren obtained a "summary judgement" against Mr Hide earlier this year, and was today awarded £35,000 in damages by Judge Patrick Moloney QC.
Mr Warren was also granted an injunction preventing Mr Hide from repeating the libel.
Describing the libel against Mr Warren as "serious", the judge said that the words spoken had damaged the promoter's reputation, and he was entitled to be vindicated.
Outside court Mr Warren, who had earlier told the judge Mr Hide's allegations were "outrageous", said: "I am pleased with the judgement and hopefully it will put an end to the matter and Herbie Hide will see what a stupid fellow he is in making remarks like that."
