Ivan Calderon Vs Rodel Mayol Rematch is set on September 21

Ivan CalderonBy Benjie Varella: Finally, the rematch between WBO light flyweight champion of Puerto Rico, Ivan Calderon (32-0-1, 6Ko’s) and tough Filipino challenger Rodel Mayol (25-3-1, 19Ko’s) has been set on September 21 in the champ’s homeland.

It can be recalled that the battle of these two little-but-toughie men resulted to a controversial technical draw at the famed Madison Square Garden during the recent Puerto Rico festival.

Judges scored it 58-56 for Mayol, 58-56 for Calderon while the third saw it dead even at 57-57 on the scorecard.

The match between the two was eventually stopped in the 6th round due to an accidental headbutt by the Filipino which resulted to an excessive bleeding from Calderon’s forehead. But that was not the first headbutt of the match. The two boxers clashed heads in the 3rd, 4th and 5th round of the match without any points deducted from either of the two.

Many boxing experts believed that Mayol may have stolen the title due to his clear connections and has done more damage to the Puerto Rican who persistently was running and playing like a mouse inside the canvass.

This time, there are no more excuses and a rematch is just what fight-fans would love to see. At the main undercard will be another Filipino Michael Farenas (25-2-3, 22Ko’s) who also recently scored a draw against Arturo Gomez.

The vicious Farenas, a protégé of two time world champion Gerry Penalosa will challenge WBO Super Featherweight Champion Roman Martinez for the title who also hails from Puerto Rico. Martinez has a decent record of 13Ko’s and a draw out of 22 fights.
