Thunder Down Under
10.31.04 - By Chris Ireland: John Ruiz and Andrew Golota may soon find themselves in a club that has Bruce Seldon greeting you at the door, Bonecrusher Smith mixing drinks at the bar, and Trevor Berbick working on his golf swing out back. The Club doesn't have much prestige, and you don't get a green jacket if you win a tournament there. Although if you know the right people, you may get a green belt. Mark your calendars boxing fans, the club of "Worst Heavyweight Champions Ever" will be adding a new member on November 13.

During their WBA Heavyweight title fight, the fans will chant "We want Tyson.....or anybody! "and "Booooooring," at Golota and Ruiz....or they might think of something clever. They're two of the most hated heavyweights around. They're dirty. They're mean. They're sporadic. So there isn't much incentive to put the $50 in Don King's wallet to see this one go down is there? Maybe there would be if there were other match-ups offered that had some potential, but Donald vs. Holyfield looks about as appetizing as the fish on a Sushi/Bate Shop menu. You know you're in trouble when you have several heavyweight champions on one card and Byrd vs. McCline has the best chance of supplying fireworks.
Maybe I'm being too tough on Golota and Ruiz. But forgive me, if you saw Golota light Riddick Bowe's shorts aflame, and John Ruiz hug Hasim Rahman so much that "The Rock" could have filed charges, it's pretty clear to you that this one will not be very pretty.
If you look at it stylistically, Golota and Ruiz's punches do come in from odd angles that seem to be perpendicular to the body of their opponents, creating an intersection around the cup area.
Part of me thinks this fight has been promoted all wrong. If I was Don King, this thing would be promoted as the next great heavyweight rivalry. " Thunder Down Under-The Nutty Professor vs. The Chairman of the Bored." You can guess who is who. Then again, it is impossible to get the casual fan to watch this fight. When I asked around to see if anybody would watch the fight with me, a buddy at work said he has a dentist appointment, my brother has opted to go to the DMV, and my neighbor said he would go but he will be declawing his cat.
So fight fans, don't get your hopes up. This one probably isn't going to live up to the high expectations of a Rahman vs. Ruiz replay. If nothing else, enjoy Norman Stone and Sam Colonna. The verbal jabs landed between those two will probably be the most telling punches of the fight.
