Their first encounter resulted to a controversial split draw at the famed Madison Garden during the Puerto Rico festival when the match was stopped in the 6th round due to an accidental headbutt..
Calderon used the same boxing technique by running around the four corners of the canvass until their heads collided.
Two judges had it 68-65 for Calderon while the other saw it 68-65 for Mayol. This is the 4th trial of Mayol for a world title.
Meanwhile, if Mayol suffered bitter defeat, his compatriots Donnie Nietes and Z Gorres both toppled their Mexican opponents in El Pelenque de la Feria in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico.
Nietes (25-1-13) retained his WBO minimumweight title against Manuel Vargas via 12-rounds split decision. The score cards were 116-110 and 118-110 for the Filipino while another judge gave Vargas 116-112.
This is the third title defence of Nietes, his second win in Mexico and his 12th straight win.
On the undercard, Gorres retires former bantamweight champion Cruz Carbajal in the 5th round of the match due to an injury. With the victory, Gorres is being eyed for a title before the end of the year.
