Rhodes Stops Moore In Classic British Brawl

By Conor Ward - Sheffield puncher Ryan Rhodes has captured the European light middleweight title after a memorable contest with Jamie Moore at the Bolton Arena.

In a fight billed as a WBC world title eliminator, Manchester's Moore established control of proceedings early on but ultimately succumbed to a dramatic seventh round TKO under fire from a resurgent Rhodes..

The action was gritty and compelling even from the outset - though defending champion and favourite Moore did more damage in those early stages before Rhodes adjusted and began to make his mark in an action-packed fifth stanza.

The seventh round was one for the archives - truly classic stuff by any standards. A superb short right hand from Rhodes put Moore on the floor early in the round, only for the Mancunian strongman to beat the count and somehow take command yet again.

But Moore's spirited reposte was to prove short lived, as a devastating flurry of blows from his experienced opponent had him trapped against the ropes trying desperately to hang on.

Referee Howard Foster wisely decided that he had seen enough at that point and stepped in to save Moore any further punishment.

Rhodes - a 32-year-old 47 fight veteran - could now have a world title shot within his grasp after this upset victory which few saw coming. Moore, meanwhile, will have to rebuild at domestic level, though he still looks a fighter with plenty to offer.

The respect between the pair - good friends outside the ring - was abundant post fight. And rightly so, for this was a spectacle any fight fan would have cherished, worthy of any stage and most probably the best fight in the UK this year.
