New Year, New Edner
Anthony Ivey: With a new year comes a time for change. A chance to make that perfunctory New Year’s resolution, which most of us waiver on by the time February comes around. For Edner Cherry, the New Year brought a slew of changes. With a new manager, new trainer, as well as new promoter, Cherry will also be competing at a different weight class, jr. lightweight. “It’s a New Year, so everything is new for me,” states Cherry. “I even have a baby on the way any day now.” Cherry, 25-6-2 with 13 KO’s, will see main event action on February 19th at the Al La Carte Pavilion in Tampa, Florida. The card is promoted by Fight Night Productions, as well Cherry’s new promoter, TKO Promotions..

“I’m feeling really good right now,” states Cherry. I am getting stronger and more focused. I still don’t have an opponent named as of yet, but whoever it is we can rumble.” Cherry also feels that all the changes to his team are positive, and will take him to the next level. “I feel great about everything. My new team will keep me busy in 2010, and help Edner Cherry become a world champion.”
While Cherry is looking to the future, he has not forgotten the lessons of his past. “Challenging for the world title against Bradley last year was a great learning experience,” explained Cherry. “I just didn’t stay busy enough, but my punch volume will be up higher for me at 130lbs. I’ll be stronger too.” With a slew of regional titles in his collection, as well as the honor of ESPN’s fighter of the year in 2006, Cherry is poised to make another run at a world title. “I’m ready to start racking up the wins, keep working hard, and become a world champion. Everything will come into place at the right time.”
