Ghana’s Charles Adamu defends Commonwealth title on March 20
By Prince Dornu-Leiku - Ghana’s Charles Adamu will defend his Commonwealth Super Middleweight title on March 20 in Namibia against local favourite Harry Simon (24-0, 17 KOs). It will be the first defence of the crown the Ghanaian pugilist won only last December 18 and he is keen to impress even though the fight takes place in front of the experienced Namibian opponent’s own fans.

But 32 year old Adamu who beat Briton Carl Dilks in London to win again the title he previously held but lost to Carl Froch in 2004, says the 37 year old Simon will be no obstacle to his ambitions.. Adamu popularly called The Crusader has his eyes firmly set on stepping unto the big stage for probable world title fights chief among them a rematch with the now WBA Super Middleweight champion Froch. So the Ghanaian has no choice than to beat Harry Simon to enhance his world title credentials, and that is just what Charles Adamu has pledged to do.
“I can’t wait for this fight because I want to get it out of the way. I have not rested since winning back this title and I am not resting till I win a world title. That is my target and I know hard work will help me get there. I know my opponent will be fighting at home but this will not be the first time I have been in the same position. I will beat him,” Adamu told www.sportsinghana.com in an interview.
Undefeated Simon is a former WBO Light Middleweight champion beating Winky Wright to claim the title in 1998, made four defences before being stripped in 2001 for failing to defend the accident due to an accident that saw two people killed. Nicknamed The Terminator, Simon also won the WBO Middleweight title in 2002 before another serious accident in November of same year in which three Belgian tourists were also killed ended his reign.
Harry Simon was found guilty of ‘culpable homicide’ and sentenced to two years in jail in 2005 but started the sentence in July 2007 after losing the appeal. He had earlier returned to boxing with an 8-round decision over Stephen Nzuemba in March 2007 and will fight for the first time since then when he meets Charles Adamu for the Commonwealth Super Middleweight title on March 20.
