Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr KO’s Marvin Sonsona

By Sean Ocampo: Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. (18-0-1, 15 KO’s) captured the vacant WBO Junior Featherweight Champion with sensational 4th round knockout of former Super Flyweight Champion “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona (14-1-1, 12 KO’s) of the Philippines in front of a raucous Puerto Rican crowd at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The end came with a tremendous left hook to the body of Sonsona. The Filipino could not beat the count of referee Luis Pabon. The time was 2:01 of the 4th round.

The Filipino showed promise with a good first round. However, the undefeated Vazquez took over and dominated the second up to the fourth round.. Vazquez constantly pressured Sonsona and pushed the Filipino to ropes, where he pounded Sonsona with heavy body shots. During the 4th round, Vazquez trapped Sonsona on the ropes and unleashed heavy combinations to the head and body. A serious left-hook to the body followed by a straight right hand and another left hook to the body finally dropped Sonsona to the canvas. The 19-year old Sonsona was in serious pain and could not beat the count.

Vazquez successfully followed his father’s, Wilfredo, Sr., footsteps by becoming Puerto Rico’s latest world champion.
