Q & A: Joel Casamayor

03.12.04 - Interview by Ike Enwereuzor - Jacboxing.com - How long have you been training for the December 4th fight vs Jose Luis Castillo?

We have been training since September. We're mentally focused and prepared 100% for this fight We'll be victorious Saturday.

What does this fight with Castillo mean to you?

This fight means a lot to me. This is for another world championship, so it's like a premier fight for me. I have to win this fight for 2004.

Your impression of Castillo?

He's a strong and a fighter but we shall beat him. He's going to realise that I got power too. Casamayor is stronger than Castillo. It's going to be a surprise to media but it will not be a surprise to us because we know what kind of work we put in. They may say that we're moving up in weight.

Your toughest fight since pros?

Every fight is a tough fight but Casamayor is stronger than ever. They think Casamayor is coming up in weight but again it will be a big surprise.

What was your fight with Baek like for the WBA title?

It was a beautiful experience because it was for a world championship. It's every professional boxers dream. It's also an amateur Boxer's dream to win medal at olympics and we did both. I want to show the world that I'm the best pound for pound. We have tried to make a fight Mayweather but it never happened.

Impression of Floyd maywheather jr.?

Good fighter, he's perfect for us but he's thinking of moving up to 147 or so.

Why are you fighting at 135?

Diego Corrales don't want to do a third fight but I'm willing to fight him. This is why I have a lot of respect to Castillo because he doesn't avoid any fighter, he wants to fight the best but we're just better.

Your thought on Victor Gutierrez?

I think Victor will become a world champion one day. He helped me with this fight and I thank him. He's very discipline for his age and experience in the game. So, watch out for him, he's a junior welterweight with a professional record of (2-0) with 2KO's

Please, tell us about your fight with Freitas?

I won that fight and they robbed me that fight.

What did you learn from that fight?

I should have put more pressure

What should fans expect saturday December 4 at Mandalay Bay?

They should expect an exciting fight, we're come fight and not to run.

How did you sell your bicylce to buy pig?

I bought a pig and killed it to feed my family, they even took my check they gave me after olympics

Compare your two fights with Diego Corales?

The first fight you saw the results. The second one I started slow but I still hurt Corales and he never hurt me. We thought I won the fight but judges gave it to him. We asked for a rematch at 130 or 135lbs but he don't want to fight me, so I have to move up for this fight. I can still fight 130lbs. Nobody want to fight at 130.

How would you describe your fight with Daniel Seda?

I was sick 2 weeks before the fight. I had 7 root canal, my face was swollen and I was in the hospital for 3 days. I took the fight because I knew I could still beat him. DJ helped me a lot with my conditioning.
